Reno’s Hidden Watering Holes: Good Ol' Brews + Sasquatch Cocktails

Reno’s Hidden Watering Holes: Good Ol' Brews + Sasquatch Cocktails

By

The craft brew and cocktail scene in Reno is growing in leaps and bounds, and in some cases, literally moving underground. The best part? You can still wear your favorite trucker hat. Only in Reno.

Underground Bars

The newest marketplace in Reno is The Basement. This 1930s former post office, which retains much of its original Art Deco flair, is now home to several restaurants, a coffee shop, and a West Elm. The former boiler room is soon to become Reno's newest bar and performance venue: The aptly named Stamp Social Club will serve high-end cocktails and is scheduled to open in mid-November. Just down the street, Our Bar (look for the sign next to Our Food) is on First Street in Downtown. While Our Bar serves pub food, you can also get seasonal beers on tap from Lagunitas and Ballast Point. Try the bar's Ruby Squirt made from Schofferhofer Grapefruit hefeweizen and grapefruit vodka or get an easy-on-the-wallet meal such as the popular Beer/Burger/Shot special ($12).

Cozy Up with Cocktails

If you are in Reno in colder weather and want a cozy, living room-like atmosphere to curl up in for the evening, check out Royce on Ridge Street. Located Downtown in a restored 1930s cottage, Royce's friendly bartenders will become part of your family by the end of the night. Royce specializes in niche wines and classic cocktails (try the brandy-based Chicago cocktail), and their popular Royce Burger (only $7); you can also order a charcuterie plate from their restaurant partner next door, Old Granite Street Eatery. In Midtown, Reno Public House offers craft beers from Nevada's Ruby Mountain Brewing Company and Idaho's Grand Teton Brewing Company and cocktails such as fruit frescas (sparkling water, fresh fruits and vegetables), and bonal (a French wine infused with wildflowers). Order the Thai or Lebanese Bowlfrom the nearby Laughing Planet Café and enjoy it on the bar's outdoor deck.

Hidden Away from the Average Tourist

If you want to see the rougher side of Reno, don't be intimidated by these off-the-beaten-path hangouts. Davidson's Distillery is a classic biker bar with some unexpected twists: The evening karaoke will have lyrics from Van Halen rather than Van Morrison and the vending machine spits out spare parts for bikes. IMBĪB Custom Brews on Second Street specializes in award-winning fruit and sour ales. Try the Berliner Weisse, a gold winner in 2016's Best of Craft Beer Awards or the Cranny Granny Cider. If you are on your way back to the Bay Area, stop in downtown Verdi on Interstate 80 Westand head to the Sasquatch Tavern & Grill for a lavender cocktail or the Sasquatch Coffee ($5.50) with brandy, Frangelico and Kahlúa and an Amaretto whipped-cream topper.
