Scenes of the City: Inside the Central Subway Project

By

For this week's Scenes of the City we caught up with the SFMTA Central Subway Project to bring you an update from the other end of the tunnel in North Beach. Both Big Alma and Mom Chung (the tunnel boring machines digging under SF to connect the Central Subway Project) are currently being disassembled at the retrieval shaft in North Beach.

Covering 40 feet per day, the machines have completed the 1.5 mile of tunnel from 4th and Brannan to the North Beach location on Powell Street. The Central Subway is expected to open to the public in 2019. Three stations will serve the line in Chinatown, Union Square, and Moscone Center as well as a surface station at 4th and Brannan.
