Don’t love camping? Try a night on the coast in this new high-tech RV designed in the Bay Area.

I love the idea of camping and the benefits of being outside in nature—staring up at the stars at night, roasting s’mores by the fire, etcetera. What I don’t like are all the inconveniences that come with camping—the bugs, all the stuff you have to pack, even the setup itself.

So when I heard about the Pebble Flow, a new all-electric, high-tech RV that recently arrived at Costanoa Lodge & Resort on the San Mateo County coast, I was intrigued.

The aerodynamic frame of the futuristic Pebble RV almost reminds me of a sleeker Cybertruck with a softer, less pretentious look. Designed by a team with backgrounds at companies including Apple, Rivian, and Zoox, it’s meant to combine the comforts of a hotel room with the freedom of the outdoors.

Inside, the camper is super airy, with a soft white color palette, and lined with floor and ceiling lights that are like something out of Star Wars—a Nubian yacht, maybe? The whole thing, from the temperature and the wheels to the lights and the windows, is controlled by an iPad. Those windows have a 270-degree panoramic view that can turn opaque with the touch of a button, which is probably my favorite feature.

There’s also a full bathroom, including a clear window shower door that can turn opaque, a kitchen with a removable induction stovetop, a queen bed, and a dining and workspace area that converts into another full-size bed. The layout sleeps up to four adults, with plenty of room for kids, dogs, or whatever combination of creatures you’re bringing along. The whole thing is clean, minimal, and very Bay Area tech.

I love that the bed can be folded into a workspace—and that you don’t need to stumble to a campground bathroom in the middle of the night. The Pebble also has essentials like sheets, pillows, towels, and bathroom amenities. All I had to pack was an overnight bag. But what I like best of all about the RV is the temperature control. When the sun goes down, there’s no need to layer up, a little thing that makes a big difference.

The Pebble is different from other rentable luxury campers. An all-electric vehicle, its 45 kWh battery and solar panels can even charge your EV. The technology and slim build are designed to reduce a lot of the challenges around towing, setup, and camping.

Page Beermann, head of design at Pebble, describes the new sleek and functional RV as similar to a Mars Rover, where every element has a purpose. “The Pebble was inspired by the desire to be completely mobile and able to go off-grid, allowing people to do things they couldn’t do because they were tied to an office or home,” he explains.

The Pebble isn’t marketed as a fully green-certified product, but its all-electric design and the use of wood along with minimal other materials are intended to reduce the carbon footprint of a traditional RV.

The Pebble Flow at Costanoa

Costanoa Lodge & Resort, tucked along the coast in Pescadero, is the only place to stay in the Pebble overnight ($460/night). The expansive property has trails, restaurants, goats to feed, glamping tents, cabins, and RV sites.

“The Pebble adds another great lodging option,” says Costanoa’s operations manager, Rachel Borick.

To Pebble Flow founder and CEO Bingrui Yang—an outdoor enthusiast and longtime fan of Costanoa—partnering to introduce the new RV to the world felt like a natural fit.

There are currently just two Pebble Flows at Costanoa, and according to Samantha Johnson, brand and content manager for Highway West Vacations, which owns Costanoa, interest has been really strong. The Pebble hits a sweet spot between camping and a hotel stay, she explains. You can wake up surrounded by nature, but still have a real bed, a private bathroom, electricity, and a coffee maker.

After a night in the Pebble Flow with my husband, a software engineer/camping fan who was just as fascinated by the pristine tech capabilities and the sleek design as I was, we left with a new appreciation for camping—at least this particular version of it. The Pebble doesn’t try to convince you to love sleeping on the ground, battling bugs, or setting up a tent. Instead, it makes the outdoors feel accessible to people who like nature but don’t necessarily want to rough it.

But if you want to try it, you’ll have to join the waitlist—unless, of course, you want to buy one of your own. The Pebble Flow is available for purchase, with pricing starting at around $138,000.
