The Bay Area is one of the most scenic places in the world and there's no better way to appreciate its splendor than from above. From easy strolls to city views, to longer hikes overlooking the Pacific Ocean, here are five of our favorite scenic lookouts from around the Bay.
As the second tallest mountain peak in the Bay Area, Mt. Tam is a little bit of an obvious choice. But throw in 360 degree views, a sunset over the Pacific Ocean, and San Francisco's quintessential fog rolling in below, and you've got the total package. The best part? It takes barely any work to get up there. There is an easy, paved trail that leads to the highest point of the mountain at 2,570 ft. What a deal! Learn more.
Insider Tip: If it's a nice day and you want to eat outside, you can head to the Mountain Home Inn for a burger and a beer, though it is a little pricey.
If you're in San Francisco and want an easy, local hike (OK more like leisurely stroll) that has beautiful views of the city, Bernal Heights Park is for you. You can park right next to the park and head up the trail to the top where there is open space that's perfect for flying a kite, a picnic, or just chilling and taking in the view. Learn more.
Insider Tip: There is a Safeway just down the street at the corner of Virginia and Mission St. where you can stock up on picnic supplies and drinks.
With 950 ft elevation gain, you'll get a good climb in on this hike (or if you're really looking to work, it makes a great trail run). It'll be well worth it upon reaching the top and looking out over the Marin coastline. Bring your pup along with you, but be sure to keep your best friend on a leash. Learn more.
Insider Tip: Need to refuel after? Head to Bar Bocce for a bite, beer, and a game of bocce on their back patio.
Begin hiking the Marin Headlands from the parking lot just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge to catch incredible views of said bridge and the San Francisco skyline. There are multiple lookout points with benches where you can drive right up or stretch your legs on an easy hike. Watching the sunset or sunrise on the bridge is a must-do Bay Area experience. Insider Tip: If you're heading to San Francisco after your hike, stop by Clement Street in the Inner Richmond District and hit up one of the many incredible restaurants.
Twin Peaks gets a lot of hype as the tallest peak in San Francisco, however, Mt. Davidson actually holds this title proudly. With that title comes an amazing perspective of the Bay Area. It's an easy hike that you can round-trip in well under an hour, but we encourage you to take your time and let the views of the city sink in. Learn more.
Insider Tip: Grab a sandwich from Monterey Deli a few blocks away and take it along for the hike and refuel with a picnic at the summit.
