2. Meat me at the Ferry Building
On February 28 at 10 a.m. beloved local meat man Taylor Boetticher of Fatted Calf will lead a cooking demonstration at the CUESA kitchen at the Ferry Building—learn the secrets of his scrumptious sausage and other delights (we’re betting there will be samples). For more information, click here.
3. Fat Chance
Call this a belated Fat Tuesday celebration—on Thursday, February 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. 18 Reasons will be hosting a New Orleans-style party, complete with beer from the Big Easy, king’s cake, lots of food and great music. Note: You must BYO beads, and admission is $10; $5 for members.
4. All Grown Up
On Tuesday, February 24, Jack Falstaff chef Jonnatan Leiva will team up with Perbacco chef Staffan Terje for a one-night-only growers dinner celebrating Hamada Farms, a family farm in Kingsburg, California. The multicourse meal will showcase the best of Hamada’s unusual fruits and vegetables and give guests the opportunity to chat with the farmers and winemakers. The cost is $85, including wine pairings (exclusive of tax and gratuity); the evening begins with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. To book your spot, call 415-836-9239.
5. Hog Wild
This is one of the best years for California oysters in recent memory, and the winter months are the best time to indulge. With that in mind, we suggest you head to Piccino on Sunday, February 22, for the third Hog Island Oyster Day, a feast built around our local bivalves. From noon until 5 p.m. the good people from Hog Island will be shucking up a storm, there will be a selection of special pizzas, and the microbrews will be free-flowing. Get in on the action!
6. Sweet Relief
If you’ve been watching news of the Australian bushfires with a feeling of helplessness, here are two chances to get involved: On February 20, the Jug Shop and Crushpad are hosting a wine tasting fundraiser to benefit the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund. Sample an unparalleled selection of Victorian wine from nearly 30 vintners and bid on some top-notch auction items, with all proceeds going to benefit the Fund. Tickets are $30 and the event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Crushpad. To register, click here. Want to get involved, but not a wine lover? Then book a seat at the benefit dinner at South Food + Wine Bar on February 24. Celebrated chef-owner Luke Mangan will prepare a four-course meal (with wine pairings), then step out from behind the stove to lead a live auction. Tickets are $125 and all proceeds from the dinner and auction will be donated to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Relief Fund. To reserve your seat, RSVP to info@southfwb.com or call 415-974-5599. The menu (and auction items) will be posted at southfwb.com this week.
