Romp With LEVY Dance

Dance Magazine labels them “a judicious blend of athletic and lyrical, brainy and sexy.” Thus we extrapolate that LEVY Dance is the hot librarian of the local dance world, an assessment that could be rather one-dimensional. For the 3D experience, check out Romp at Theater Artaud where dancers are seated with the audience at a banquet table, lending a hyper-intimacy to the performance.

Romp plays November 17-20. Theater Artaud, 450 Florida Street. Tickets are $18-23 at levydance.org.

Dance Brigade Hits 35 Years of Dance

Dance Brigade celebrates 35 years of exploring the intersection between social issues and art. The first dance company specific to women’s issues, Dance Brigade was influenced by the women’s movement of the 70s, the Latin-American solidarity movement of the 80s and the anti-war movement of the 90s. With a video retrospective woven through live performance by the women who've contributed to Dance Brigade over the past three decades, the evening features  The Great Liberation Upon Hearing, fresh off a run at NYC’s Dance Theater Workshop. After its San Francisco premiere a few years ago, Culture Vulture said, “Krissy Keefer created a multi-media ecstatic revel. The dancers are exuberant and remarkable, taking many roles, performing with high energy and acrobatic skill."

Dance Brigadeplays November 18-20. Novellus Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 700 Howard Street. Tickets are free. Information at dancebrigade.org.

Liss Fain Word For Word

Liss Fain's striking dance style joins forces with literary theater company Word for Word to create The False and the True Are One. Word for Word's Nancy Shelby reads Lydia Davis’s funny and unusual short stories, while Fain’s dancers perform within the translucent architecture of white screens. The audience can move around the screens and through the performance space, allowing for an unpredictable and closeup experience of Fain's gorgeous choreography.

The False and the True Are One plays November 17-20. The Forum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 701 Mission Street. Tickets are $12.50-25 at 415-978-2787. Info at lissfaindance.org.
