Drink Here Now: 5 Places to Sip This Week

By

1. Local Edition Opens: The team behind Bourbon & Branch and Rickhouse has added a new spot to their portfolio. Newspaper-themed Local Edition (left) is housed in the historic Hearst Building's cavernous basement, which is also the former Call and Examiner printing room. The decor, as with its predecessors, is vintage-inspired and romantic; the vibe is 50's jazz club (red booths, dramatic lighting, curtains, cocktail waitresses in black frocks) meets old-school journalists' watering hole (period newspapers displayed in shadow boxes, typewriters lining the back walls). A selection of $9 cocktails are named after newsmakers of the period, while $48 bottles of punch (which serve 5-6 people) are served with sparkling wine or soda on the side. While the space is sizable enough to drop in with a friend or two, the bar also offers 12 tables (with table service) that can handle big groups. (Monday-Friday, 5 pm-2 am, Saturday, 7 pm-2 am, 691 Market St., Financial District.)

2. Surfrider Foundation Earth Day Block Party: As part of Earth Day this Sunday, Trumer Pils and the Surfrider Foundation are encouraging folks to come help remove trash from Ocean Beach. In exchange for their efforts, volunteers can celebrate at an Earth Day block party, with drinks provided by Trumer and Green Bar, food trucks, live music by the Mermen, and a raffle for prizes like a Trumer surfboard custom-made by Stretch Boards. Trumer's Facebook event page has more info. (Sunday, April 22: Cleanup, 10 am-12 pm at Ocean Beach, Stairwell 17, Fulton St. and Great Highway; Party, 12-6 pm at the Riptide, 3639 Taraval St., Outer Sunset.)

3. San Francisco Bike Party Rides to Speakeasy: Speakeasy's hosting a special edition of their famed brewery bashes for the folks at the San Francisco Bike Party. Hop aboard your steed and ride with the pack from Hayes Valley to the Bayview, where you'll be rewarded with $3 pints and carmaraderie. Bike parking will be available, and Speakeasy will donate a portion of their proceeds to SF Yellow Bike, a volunteer-run community bike shop. (Saturday, April 21, 3:30-9 pm; ride starts at Hayes St. and Octavia St. and ends at Speakeasy Ales & Lagers, 1195 Evans Ave., Bayview.)

4. RN74's Third-Anniversary Happy Hour: RN74, the Michael Mina-owned restaurant and wine bar, is turning three years old this Tuesday, and they're offering $3 wines by the glass to celebrate. The two wines on offer will be the 2009 Michel Sarrazin Cote Chalonnaise 'Clos de Liron' and the 2010 Domaine Perraud Macon-Villages Vielles Vignes. Can't make the party? They're also offering $3 take-away desserts like peanut butter mousse, vanilla bean panna cotta, and French cookies all week long. (Party: Tuesday, April 24, 5:30-10 pm; Desserts: Sunday, April 22-Saturday, April 28, at RN74, 301 Mission St., SOMA.)

5. Credo's Tax Relief Happy Hour: If you're feeling the pain after sending off that big check to the IRS (or don't want to blow your shiny new refund), Credo is here to help with pizza for the 99 percent. Just order a cocktail or a glass of wine at regular price, and they'll hook you up with a pizza for 99 cents. They'll also have some special cocktails inspired by Tax Day. Further details are available here. (Through Friday, April 20, 2:30-6 pm, at Credo, 360 Pine St., Financial District.)
