Fresh Produce Free-For-All Comes to Hayes Valley This Sunday

By

Hayes Valley Farm has managed to turn around from a true tragedy (a devastating bee attack) and organize an event that will make every San Franciscan happy: a weekly event offering free fruits and veggies titled, appropriately, the Fresh Produce Free-For-All.

Says Haighteration, the farm has teamed up with the Wigg Party (a sustainably-minded community organization) in a first-for-Hayes-Valley experiment to collect all the local farmers' markets unsold produce each weekend to save them from hauling it all to landfills and compost piles, and offering it to hungry locals every Sunday.

"Luckily, the Farm is a perfect place to host the Fresh Produce Free-For-All; whatever isn’t eaten on the spot, taken away for meals for the week, or processed into delicious salsas, sauces, or jams can go directly into the compost pile on the Farm," reports the Wigg Party.

Last Sunday, the Wigg Party and the farm collected a mind-boggling 1,000 lbs. of produce from three different farmers markets, and this weekend, it gets even more ambitious. They're going to six farmers markets, from Civic Center to Inner Sunset to the Ferry Building to gather, hopefully, even more fresh goodies.

Stop by the Hayes Valley Farm this Sunday to load up on farmers market fare for free, from 12:30 pm to 6pm. Check out the event's Facebook page for all the details. Your stomachs won't regret it!
