Fully Caffeinated: A Citywide Map of Third Wave Coffee
Whether your loyalty lies with Blue Bottle or you're more of a Four Barrel fanatic, more than 40 cafes in town now provide a Third Wave fix (post-WWII rise of instant coffee=first wave, Starbucks and Peet’s=second wave, obsessive, bean-sourcing micro-roasters like Blue Bottle and Four Barrel=third wave). Here's where to find the Third Wave variety across the city.

Hi there! Barefoot is also available at Lunch Geek, in Civic Center hood, Market & Fell & Polk (3 or four Varieties usually)
To all the dismayed Philz fans:
PHILZ IS NOT THIRD WAVE COFFEE.
Here's a wiki definition - "The Third Wave of Coffee refers to a current movement to produce high-quality coffee, and consider coffee as an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity, like wheat. This involves improvements at all stages of production, from improving coffee bean growing, harvesting, and processing, to stronger relationships between coffee growers and coffee traders and roasters, to higher quality and fresh roasting, at times called microroasting (by analogy with microbrew beer), to skilled brewing."
Yes, please include Sightglass and also check out Fraiche Yogurt (1910 Fillmore). They have a Blue Bottle account.
Don't forget the farthest reaches of the western front:
Pizzetta 211 helps me keep my sanity in the fog of Seacliff with Blue Bottle... (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pizzetta-211-san-francisco#query:pizza%20211 )
Missing sightglass on 7th at Folsom is a big issue. Philz should be nowhere near a list of quality coffee vendors.
OK - First of all, Steves, why are you such a hater?
More importantly, I would like to add my name to the list of dismayed Philz fans. Why wouldn't you include such a great local chain? I will admit, their coffee is not for everyone, but it is definitely worthy of this index.
Does it have to do with where the beans are sourced/roasted?
Add to map:
- Outerlands (Sightglass Coffee - 4001 Judah)
- Vega at Langton (Blue Bottle Coffee - 1246 Folsom)
- The cafe at Cafe du Nord (Ritual - 2168 Market)
- Knead Patisserie (Four Barrel - 3111 24th)
OK, Philz folks, get a grip: It's not good coffee, roasted to death and back and flavored, the drinks are a gimmick, and their coffees are cut rate and not well sourced. On all three fronts, fail. Can we move on?
Please correct the address for the Flora Grubb Gardens address of Ritual Coffee Roasters: It's 1634 Jerrold Avenue, 94124.
Thanks!
-Jason at Flora Grubb Gardens
no Philz = no bueno
Seriously, no Philz?
Rodgers. 20th and san carlos. One cup at a time for everything. The shop opened up a year or two ago but Rodger's been roasting locally since before the ritual and fourbarrel guys were pooping their diapers. And I don't mean ironic hipster diaper party.
I used to get my coffee at ritual, then fourbarrel in the morning. But Rodgers has more roast variety, very high quality and far less douche in the line.
You forgot Sightglass (on 7th & also at Hooker's Sweet Treats)
No Philz? - that's just not right.
You missed Vega, Folsom and 8th. They serve blue bottle.
