Live Show Review: Neon Indian, Miniature Tigers & Prefuse 73 @ Mezzanine

To be expected, last night’s lineup at Mezzanine was nothing short of mind-melting. Highly experimental, improv multi-instrumentalist masters, all three bands did not disappoint.

Phoenix-based Miniature Tigers got the crowd swaying with their special brand of indie chill. It was almost as if they were Neon Indian-lite. A little less keys and strung out repetition, but intriguing and catchy nonetheless. I personally can’t wait for these guys to blow up out of the stratosphere.

The legendary Prefuse 73 brought some serious acid-induced ad hoc trip-hop, heavy on the trip. With seriously drugged out fanatics frantically gyrating to the ever-changing beats, it was no surprise that the dance floor was complete chaos. Overall, a pretty long set of one seemingly continuous song with many many many change-ups.

Neon Indian, aka composer, producer, Alan Palomo, heaved some pretty intense dreampop, or “chillwave” as it’s been dubbed as of late. Slinging some synth-heavy noise, Neon Indian felt like a drug-induced lazy afternoon, a cloud of hazy noise that begs to be danced to. We left the set floating on a musical cloud nine.
