SF Street Style: Best Friends with Distinctly Different Styles in Union Square

By

Best friends Anna Wilson (left) and Annie Yu (right) were happy to step out in some post-rain daywear last weekend. I love seeing how different the styles of two best friends can be. Both students at Academy of Art University, Annie wore a trendy layered look with a killer turquoise statement necklace, while Anna's was much more free-spirited with tri-color hair and textured toe-nail polish.

What Annie's wearing:  Forever 21 printed dress; Cropped lace top from Urban Outfitters; Egyptian turquoise beaded necklace, gift from grandmother; Quilted Burberry leather bag, borrowed from mother; Forever 21 faux-fur lined lace-up booties.

What Anna's Wearing:  Hair self-dyed with Splat! Luscious Raspberries and Blue Envy; Gray tank from mother; Vintage navy tea-length skirt, purchased from Out of the Closet; White sandals, gift from the Philippines; Lucky Brand red leather bag, gift from Annie's mother; Wet 'n' Wild Wild Shine toe nail polish in Black Creme and Kaleidoscope.

7 Style Questions for Annie and Anna:

1. Where are your favorite places to shop in SF?

AY:  Wasteland, Loved to Death, Urban Outfitters and Lush.

AW:  I like second-hand stores because I'm a student, and it's easier on the environment. I also love men's long sleeve sweaters from H&M, and jewelry from street vendors on Market Street. For perfume and gifts I like Lush, little shops in the Haight and Rainbow Grocery.

2. What's in your purse?

AY:  My wallet, a hard drive, journal, Burt's Bees chapstick, pepper spray, Trident layer gym.

AW:  I carry a water brush and watercolor pencils, and always have a mini sketchbook from Hand.Book. I also carry a Lime Crime lipgloss, my wallet, spearmint Altoids, usually an apple, my SIGG water bottle and a few inhalers because I have serious asthma. I always forget my phone at home!

3. Which three adjectives would you use to describe your personal style?

AY:  Quirky, eclectic, grungy.

AW:  Simple, hippie-dippie, and a little dark.

4. Shoes or accessories?

AY:  Shoes!

AW:  Accessories. I love my necklaces which are almost always gifts from my loved ones or boyfriend. I also love bright lipsticks -- I was known to put purple and white eyeshadow over chapstick before I discovered Lime Crime lipsticks and glosses!

5. What spring trends are you most excited for?

AY:  Art deco graphics and pastel shades.

AW:  I would love to get a flowy, black or white long-sleeved dress!

6. Which products do you swear by?

AY:  Lush shampoo and conditioner.

AW:  I boil spinach and use the water on my skin as toner to soften it. If I'm breaking out I use Lush's toner tabs in Dream Steam -- they're magic!

7. What's the best part about living in San Francisco?

AY:  I love being able to get everywhere without being dependent on a car. My friends and I love going to the Wharf for baja fries and fried Oreos at The Codmother, and over to Little Italy for City Lights Bookstore.

AW:  I'm from Los Angeles, and it seems much more laid-back here -- people are more willing to express themselves differently. I see middle-aged women with blue hair at church, and I love the Haight and Mission for their celebration of diversity and individualism.
