7 Weekend Hikes + Bike Rides to Do in San Francisco Now


If you're feeling a little cooped up and are ready to burn off some steam, check out our top seven weekend-worthy hikes and bike rides starting in San Francisco.

A little longer than your typical Sunday stroll, these trails promise to help take your urban staycation to the next level.

Golden Gate Park Loop

One of the top three most-visited parks in the United States, Golden Gate Park's loop trail is a great option for the whole family, including those with four legs. GGP is also home to a variety of flora and fauna such as the California live oak, a tree native to this park. Visitors can find these oaks at the northeastern section of the park.

The Ferry Building to Mount Tamalpais Cycle Route

If you prefer traveling by two wheels, then this route from San Francisco's Ferry Building to Mt. Tam over in Marin is a must. At just under 60 miles, the trek is not for the faint of heart, but it's certainly worth the ride.

Cruise down the Embarcadero, over the Golden Gate Bridge, and through Sausalito on your way to Mill Valley as you take in city, water, and mountain views. It doesn't get much more epic than this!

​Crissy Field to Marin Headlands via the Golden Gate Bridge

Escape the city and head for the hills by crossing the GGB in search of nature, beaches, lighthouses, and awesome roads.

Just a few short miles from the bustle of San Francisco lies the relative peace and quiet of the Marin Headlands, where you can enjoy Golden Gate views among rolling hills and soaring raptors. The first part of the journey into the hills consists of a constant uphill climb for around 500 feet until reaching the summit of Hawk Hill. Zipping downhill on the curvy coastal road will lead you quickly past even more scenery, a multitude of old military concrete defense structures, and towards Point Bonita.

​ Baker Beach Trail to Golden Gate Bridge

Manageable but still with epic views, Golden Gate Bridge from Baker Beach Trail is a 6.3 mile heavily trafficked out and back. If you still haven't scratched it off your bucket list, make sure to stop and check out the bunkers. Or, head out in the evening to catch a killer sunset with views of the GGB.

​Presidio Loop Trail

An oldie, but a goodie, the Presidio Loop is a six-mile trail that's great for walking or running. It boasts beautiful wildflowers, views, and charming historical landmarks. Wander through the forests and grasslands on this rolling trail as you take in the views of the bridge and the bay.

Bonus, bring your pup on a leash.

Upper Market Stairway Walks

Looking to switch it up with a little climbing? Or perhaps you're actually starting to miss your gym's StairMaster (gasp!)?

Then head for the Upper Market Stairway! With a plentiful mix of steep hills and hidden stairs, this seven-mile loop is not only guaranteed to get your blood pumping but is probably more fun than the typical indoor gym workout.

​San Francisco's Pacific Shore

What is summer without a beach?! This 6.5 mile out and back trail is great for walking, running, or cycling. Make sure to stop and check out Sutro Baths while you're at it, and keep your eyes peeled for marine wildlife.

This part of the city can get quite chilly and windy, so pack accordingly and dress in layers. Because, #microclimates.
