7 Cheap-Chic Wines to Bring to the Beach

By

Although the wind whips mercilessly through San Francisco in the summer months, there's just no experience comparable to getting wine-drunk at Ocean Beach while bundled up in a thick sweater. Pick up one of these convenient, summery vinos for a boozy bout at the beach (the more you drink, the warmer you'll be!).

Simpler Wines

That's right: TJ's, as per usual, has come in ultra-clutch with their relatively new Simpler Wines, which come in packs of four 6-ounce cans for just $4. At that price, you can catch us double fisting all summer. They come in white or rosé, both sparkling. So crack open a can and get chugging—preferably with the waves crashing in your ears. // traderjoes.com

Yellow Tail Sauvignon Blanc

Yes, we've all heard of Yellow Tail, and yes you've drunk it at Dolores Park a million times. But Yellow Tail is a classic and their sauvignon blanc is uber-delish and cheap as all hell (around $8 for a bottle). Sweet hints of passion fruit, grapefruit, and a full wallet will keep you smiling in the sun all day. Drink cold or not—no one's judging. // yellowtailwine.com

Presto Sparkling Cuvée

Canned wine is all the rage these days and Presto made their own version. This sparkling cuvée comes refrigerated from Whole Foods so you can always drink it cold—convenient for a pick-up on the way to the beach. They come in a four-pack of 6-ounce cans for $13. // 365bywholefoods.com

Barbolini Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro

If you've never had a Lambrusco before, we implore you to dig around at a wine shop for this plummy, velvety, sparkly Grasparossa di Calstelvetro from Italy near Modena. The deep purplish red has a whimsical purple foam and is super sweet and refreshing for a summer day at the beach. Pop the top on this incredible fizzy red selling for around $14 a bottle, and definitely don't forget to bring some salty jamon serrano to munch on. // omwines.com

Bonny Doon "A Proper Pink"

This rich, tart, relatively boozy and spicy dark pink rosé is from Bonny Doon Vineyards in Santa Cruz, and sells for $16 a bottle. A self-proclaimed brosé, this wine hints at strawberries, raspberries, and watermelon, and has a lightly savory finish. Bring salty hard cheese with you, and screw off the top of this delicious local wine. // bonnydoonvineyard.com

Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina

From Basque country in Spain, Txakolinas are gently effervescent, acidic, very dry, and low alcohol white wines, which makes them perfect for a beach day. This varietal is on the pricier side for a whim at around $21-$23 a bottle, but incredibly delicious with citrus and green apple coming through, and a tiny hint of salinity, which recalls the ocean. Of course it's a screw top and of course you should drink it with fresh oysters. // txakoliameztoi.com

McFadden Cuvée Brut

From Mendocino County, McFadden's cuvée brut is 50 percent chardonnay and 50 percent pinot noir and runs for around $25 a bottle, which is pretty decent for a sparkler. The green apple, citrus, and pineapple flavors meld and contrast with cream and honey, and the pop top makes it easy, breezy for beach enjoyment. // mcfaddenfarm.com
