In this week's food-scene news, the Mission's Roxy's Cafe calls it quits, Mama's in North Beach is opening a new market and a second location nearby, Bun Mee debuts a second location in the FiDi, and Fifth Floor says goodbye for good.
Chef Manny Torres Gimenez, who burst on the scene a couple years back with his pop-up at tiny Mr. Pollo, has shuttered Roxy's Cafe the pasta-driven spinoff he opened after leaving Mr. Pollo. But fans can rest assured that he'll be bringing some of those pastas over to the menu at The Palace (3047 Mission Street), where he remains the chef. [Inside Scoop]
The ever-popular Mama's (1701 Stockton Street), despite its crazy crowds only has 35 seats. And now, finally, the Sanchez family who own the place are opening a bigger, second location at the former Piazza Market space at Vallejo and Columbus. It will feature 80 seats and an expansion of the bakery operation, as well as an attached market called Lil' Mama's. [Chron]
Expanding on its Pacific Heights success, Bun Mee has opened a second location at 650 Market Street. The place will feature the same menu of traditional and not-so-traditional banh mi sandwiches, including the Sloppy Bun, which is basically a Sloppy Joe garnished with vegetables and cilantro like a banh mi (pictured above). Over in the Presidio, Traci Des Jardins' new restaurant has gotten a name: The Commissary. Look for it to debut this spring. [Inside Scoop]
And Thursday night was the swan song for Fifth Floor, which as we announced earlier is closing its doors after fourteen years at the Palomar Hotel. Chef David Bazirgan will remain, and a new, unnamed, casual concept will take its place later this year focusing on cocktails and small plates. [7x7]
