Geek Out on Films in Palm Springs

This desert enclave is a mecca for midcentury modern design buffs. But Palm Springs is a destination for film lovers too, with seven festivals throughout the year, including one for the city’s LGBT following.

In June, International ShortFest celebrates its 18th season (June 19-25). In September, it’s Cinema Diverse, the Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (Sept. 20-23). All festivals take place at the historic Camelot Theatres.

A trip to Palm Springs requires a glamorous pool. You’ll find it at The Saguaro (from $149), a colorful Joie de Vivre hotel. By contrast, boutique hotel Alcazar (from $79) is more laid-back with all-white rooms, private terraces, and access to stylish cruisers for biking around.

For Palm Springs Restaurant Week (June 1–10), local kitchens—like Copley’s on Cary Grant’s former estate near Camelot Theatres—offer three-course prix-fixe dinners at $24 and $36. If you’re staying at The Saguaro, don’t miss Tinto, a Basque-inspired tapas bar, and El Jefe, a Mexico City-style taqueria and tequila bar, both opened by Iron Chef winner Jose Garces.
