(We all scream for) Ice Cream Takeout + Delivery around the Bay Area

By

We're having a heat wave—and there are plenty of local scoop shops at the ready to help you keep cool and sate your sweet tooth.

Order up sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, snow, and fro-yo for takeout and delivery from these Bay Area ice cream shops.

Bi-Rite Creamery (3692 18th St., Mission) is once again scooping its iconic flavors—think black sesame, salted caramel, and honey lavender—alongside seasonal (peach leaf) and vegan (chai latte) flavors, sundaes, soft serve, and more for pickup and delivery.

Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous (699 22nd St., Dogpatch) serves innovative flavors like chicory coffee, ginger cookie, sloe gin, and, our all time fav, frozen hot chocolate. Get it for pickup or delivery via Postmates.

San Francisco Hometown Creamery (1290 9th Ave., Inner Richmond) can't currently offer its famed five-scoop flights, but you can get pints of strawberry balsamic, horchata, and blueberry lemon bar ice cream—along with homemade cookies and maple pecan bars—delivered via GrubHub.

Smitten (multiple locations in SF, Oakland, and San Jose) is a hometown favorite that's proven itself beyond the semi-gimmick of making instant ice cream with liquid nitrogen. During shelter in place, they're scooping up creative flavors including Bee Sting With Chico Honey, Brookies & Cream, and Chocolate Ganache by the quart and pint for takeout via online order at smitten.revelup.com. Don't miss out on the sundae kits with homemade toppings; there are even vegan scoops.

Humphry Slocombe (multiple locations in SF, Berkeley, and Oakland) still makes ice cream fanatics go bananas for Jake Godby's irreverent flavors—think Prosciutto or Elvis (The Fat Years). Get your fix of such flavors as Matchadoodle, Queer Eye Cookies & Graham, Blueberry Boy Bait, and Hong Kong Milk Tea—available is single serving cups, pints, and party packs—for takeout or delivery via DoorDash. You can also stock up on sugar cones, sprinkles, homemade bourbon caramel, and frosted peanuts.

Salt & Straw (multiple locations in SF, Palo Alto, and Burlingame) is not for plain ole vanillas. The small-batch ice cream is all about intense (and sometimes cuckoo) flavor combos: Pear and Blue Cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil, Salted & Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and more. Order for pickup at saltandstraw.com.

Garden Creamery (3566 20th St., Mission) is loved for its tasty "chimney" cones, made from twisted Hungarian cake dough. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait for a full reopening to get your hands on those tasty cones. Until then, pints of Galia Melon, Ube Pandan, Black Sesame, Genmaicha, and more are available for pickup 3pm to 8pm Fridays and 11am to 3pm Saturdays. Pre-ordering launches 7pm Thursdays at gardencreamery.square.site.

Milkbomb (1717 17th St., Potrero Hill) disrupted the old ice cream sandwich by stuffing scoops into a sliced, hole-less doughnut for one delicious sugar bomb. During SIP, the owners of this family-run shop are personally making deliveries to those who text their full name and address to 408-702-5143; the wait can be up to two weeks, but you'll be helping out a small, independent business. Find updates via Instagram, and also donate to their GoFundMe.

Powder (260 Divisadero St., Lower Haight) brought something all new to SF: gourmet, shaved-to-order, fluffy ribbons of icy ice cream. Now, the Taiwanese-style shaved snow spot is open for curbside pickup and delivery via Postmates. Build your own snow or order featured "S'nome picks" including Killer Cereal (topped with sweet milk glaze and Fruity Pebbles) and Valencia (horchata shaved snow topped with sweet milk glaze, sliced almonds, TCHO Chocolate, and cinnamon sugar); order ahead at powdershavedsnow.square.site.

Baked Bear (303 Columbus Ave., North Beach) is a chain, but there's no beating homemade cookies, baked fresh daily, hugging flavors like chocolate chip, red velvet cake, and cookies 'n cream. Order online via various delivery services; go to thebakedbear.com.

The Ice Cream Bar (815 Cole St., Cole Valley), known for its retro, soda fountain vibes and old fashioned (yet organic) ice cream drinks, is open for limited hours (3pm to 8pm) for pickup as well as delivery via Caviar. Grab an ice cream sando and pints of flavors including Banana Puddin', Butterscotch, and Creme Fraiche.

Polly Ann Ice Cream (3138 Noriega St., Outer Sunset) has 500 rotating flavors—check their Facebook page for current scoops available for pickup from 12:30pm to 5pm.

Loving Cup (multiple locations in SF and Marin) takes fro-yo to the next level with interesting flavors and fine fat-free and dairy-free options too. You can order for pickup and delivery via Postmates and DoorDash. Creative mashups currently include The Dude Abides (chocolate with almond butter and English toffee) and Dirty Hipster (vanilla with Nutella and Oreos).

Gott's Roadside (multiple locations Bay Area–wide) may be best known for its delicious burgers, but the soft serve ice cream is one of their best treats. Go all in with their hand-dipped shells in flavors like blueberry and peanut butter. Please check their website for the up-to-date hours and temporary closures (currently, the St. Helena location is closed due to the wildfires).

Honey Creme (839 Irving St., Inner Sunset; and 686 Barber Ln., Milpitas) is a small shop with major soft serve made from Taiwanese fresh-milk and dense whipping cream. Make it fun with toppings of honeycomb, cotton candy, and popcorn. The shops are open for pickup during limited hours; check Instagram for updates.

Uji Time (22 Peace Plaza, #440, Japantown and 106S S B St., San Mateo) serves swirls of matcha, sesame, and tofu flavored fro-yo in cute fish-shaped cones. Currently their Japantown and San Mateo shops only are open for pickup with pre-order at ujitimedessert.square.site. Check Instagram for updates.

Tara's Organic Ice Cream (3173 College Ave, Berkeley) is next level, with guilt-free scoops in flavors including Cardamom, Chinese 5 Spice, Earl Grey, Mango Agave Sorbet, and Walnut. You can also call 510-655-5014 to order custom ice cream cakes, order online for shipping, or order local pickup.

Fenton's Creamery (4226 Piedmont Ave, Oakland) has been dishing up good ole hot fudge sundaes and the whole ice cream parlor/diner experience since 1894. Order classic sundaes, floats, and banana splits for delivery or curbside pickup in Oakland; the Vacaville location is open for socially distanced outdoor dining.

Churn Urban Creamery, a woman- and immigrant-owned independent scoop shop mixes organic ingredients into eggless dairy and non-dairy ice creams inside the historic Avenue Theater in SF's Portola neighborhood. Creative flavors, including a boozy Berry Frosé, Rosemary Olive Oil, and Creme Brulee, are available for curbside pickup and delivery, Wednesday through Sunday. Pre-order at order-churnsf-com.square.site.
