For our column Jams We Love, we're turning you onto the songs that keep us going every day. Today, a mix of songs about moms for Mother's Day!
1. Tupac, "Dear Mama"
Just try to listen to this and not have a few tears come to your eyes.
2. Ozzy Osbourne, "Mama, I'm Coming Home"
Ozzy in the 90s was definitely not as out of his mind as 80s Ozzy was. Case in point? This song (fun fact: it was written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead). It might not be about moms in the traditional sense, but it is sung from the point of view of someone who longs for nurturing and the comforts of family and home....which is exactly what moms are made for!
3. Spice Girls, "Mama (I Love You)"
I bought this CD in 1996 when I was about 10, but my mom wasn't entirely stoked on me listening to songs like "2 Become 1." This song was the one that saved her from confiscating the entire thing, so I'd crank it up everytime she'd pass by my bedroom.
4. Lauryn Hill, "Zion"
Sung by one of the craziest, most talented and passionate ladies in R&B history, she gets real on this song about being a mom for the very first time. Heavy stuff.
5. The Shirelles, "Mamma Said"
Yeah, it's an oldies radio staple that is mildly annoying if you listen to it when you're younger and at the peak of bratty teenager mode. Nowadays it's creepily accurate....a realization that hits you over the head when you randomly hear it playing, say, softly in a laundromat as you fold your clothes.
