Live Music This Week: Geographer, Grateful Dead, and More

By

Hey good news! Cafe Du Nord is BACK! The iconic music venue reopened its doors last week under new leadership. And yes, live music will be served occasionally. Let us rejoice.

Thursday: Geographer at the Chapel

Change is afoot for San Francisco’s finest electro champber pop band, Geographer. Mike Deni and company just released a new album, Ghost Modern, the band’s third full-length. Reviews are rightfully glowing, blending “emotional despair with musical euphoria, electronic noise with analog soul,” as SFGate put it. Deni also finds himself fronting new personnel after his original touring mates bowed out after the release of Ghost Modern. Cellist Joyce Lee, guitarist and bass player Duncan Nielsen, and drummer Cody Rhodes are parts of the Geographer equation suddenly.

Tuesday: Allen Stone at the Chapel

On his major label debut, his third full-length album called Radius, singer-songwriter Allen Stone continues a discography of soul revival desperately needed, despite whatever fads and phases are currently dictating the national mood. The 28-year-old Washington native defies expectations with ease again on his latest album; NPR says it’s "meant for those of us who like our R&B slightly unkempt and exceedingly feelingful," and we’ll gladly say the album is simply a triumph of mind and soul and swagger.

Friday: Ryan Hemsworth at 1015 Folsom

Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth ignites parties with the flick of the wrist. He also keeps names like Grimes, Frank Ocean, and Danny Brown sounding fresh. Hemsworth remixed each of those artists this past year, each an astounding spin we never saw coming. See below:

Friday: Basement Jaxx at Public Works

What’s not to love? No seriously, there’s something for everyone in the Basement Jaxx reportoire: rap, funk, ragga, disco and garage, all of which are exposed to non-traditonal house motifs. This UK production duo has been putting out brilliant albums since 1999, highlighted by Rooty (2001) and Kish Kash (2003), both largely considered seminal house full-lengths by anyone who ever studied the career arcs of more famous bretheren like Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers. The duo’s latest album, Junto, builds on early all-inclusive methodology and success stories. It's another staggering, spirited effort from an act that deserves constant celebration.

Saturday/Sunday: Grateful Dead at Levi's

Original members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir are really, really, finally, thankfully, gratefully doing this. While the cognitive dissonance of a legendary jam band playing in a behemoth of a modern facility will feel weird, there’s just too much joy to be cynical. The band is celebrating 50 years (!) of the Grateful Dead, and will be the penultimate performance (they’ll play Soldier Field later this summer). Trey Anastasio will join. Prepare thy brain for explosion.
