What's in your Bay, Team USA sailor Hans Henken?

7x7 is proud to partner with the Mubadala SailGP Season 3 Grand Final, which is bringing a weekend of epic racing to San Francisco Bay on Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7.

In our 'What's in your Bay?" series, 7x7 asks local chefs, artists, designers, athletes, and entrepreneurs what restaurants, venues, and getaways form the landmarks of their Bay Area (and beyond).

Professional sailing athlete Hans Henken travels around the world to compete on the open seas. He'll be headed to the 2024 Olympics next year, where he and sailing partner Ian Barrows will go for gold in the men's double-handed skiff division. But before that journey begins, he'll be showcasing his talent a little closer to home.

This weekend at the SailGP Mubadala Season 3 Grand Final, Henken will be the flight controller on Team USA's F50 foiling catamaran as they race from Alcatraz to the Golden Gate Bridge. Catch him in action from 2:30pm to 4pm on May 6th and 7th.

When he's not competing, Henken and fiancée Helena Scutt call Twin Peaks home. The athlete, who's also a Stanford alum, tells us what's in his bay, from his favorite dinner splurge to his go-to morning bike route.

What's your favorite splurge restaurant?

When I am looking to splurge on a Friday night, I think it is totally worth dining at St. Francis Yacht Club (99 Yacht Rd., Marina), because not only is the food great, but you get to experience a front row view of the Golden Gate bridge backlit by an amazing sunset while eating dinner.

What’s your favorite place to hike or bike in the Bay Area?

My fiancée and I enjoy biking across the Golden Gate Bridge in the early mornings and riding the Hawk Hill Loop. It's a great morning workout and an awesome and easy way to get out of the city and experience the beauty of Northern California.

What’s your favorite Northern California winery, brewery, or distillery?

My favorite is Dry Creek Vineyard in Sonoma (3770 Lambert Bridge Rd., Healdsburg). I recommend trying their Heritage Vine Zinfandel because it is known to be one of the oldest zinfandel vines in the world.

What’s your favorite Northern California day trip?

Driving up the CA-1 to Bodega Bay because of the picture-perfect views and awesome hiking trails.

What is your go-to neighborhood for food?

Definitely the Mission for authentic Mexican tacos and burritos.

"My favorite place to take out-of-town visitors is Angel Island because it offers a unique and unobstructed 360 degree view of the entire Bay," says Henken.(Courtesy of @brukdahl)

Where’s your favorite place to take out of town visitors?

Angel Island, because it offers a unique and unobstructed 360-degree view of the entire bay, from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate and everything in between.

Where do you like to get away for the weekend?

Santa Cruz is great for a weekend getaway because of its close proximity to San Francisco, easy access to beautiful beaches with good surf, and awesome redwood forests for hiking.

What do you love most about living in the Bay Area?

San Francisco Bay is known as one of the most highly regarded and premier sailing venues in the entire world. It attracts numerous world-class sailors annually who come to train and compete on its challenging tides and strong winds.
