Which sounds better: getting outside this weekend, or getting outside this weekend with your dog? Since the answer is clearly the latter, read on for the Bay Area’s top dog-friendly adventures.
Enjoy a Sunset and Bonfire at Ocean Beach
With the shorter winter days, San Francisco is feeling pretty chilly. What’s the best way to fight against it? Head to Ocean Beach with your pup, some pals, and plenty of firewood to catch the sunset. The fire pits are set up between Fulton and Lincoln Streets; get there well before the sun goes down to make sure you can grab a spot. Bring firewood, blankets, marshmallows, and plenty of layers. Inside Tip: Fires are only allowed within the provided concrete fire rings, and you’ll almost definitely get busted by the patrolling cops if you try to build one somewhere else, so don’t do it! Remember to check on the “Spare the Air” day status before you head out.
Camp at Half Moon Bay State Beach
Just thirty miles south of the city you’ll find Half Moon Bay State Beach, two miles of sandy shoreline split into four small beaches. At your campsite, you’ll have access to picnic tables, BBQ grills, fire rings, and hot showers—not to mention dozens of hikes and rides around Half Moon Bay. Play a game of catch as you get the grill going and watch the fog roll in. Learn more.
Inside Tip: You’ll be camping right in front of Kelly Avenue, one of Half Moon Bay’s most consistent surf spots. Bring your board and wetsuit!
Hike at McNee Ranch State Park in San Mateo County
Home to San Mateo County’s tallest peak, McNee Ranch State Park is a great spot to head out on a hike with your dog. Climbing 1,800 feet up on a fire road to North Peak will definitely get your heart rate up, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Pacific, Devil’s Slide, and San Pedro Mountain. After the hike, head to Puerto 27 in Pacifica for a drink and some amazing sunset views. Learn more.
Inside Tip: Driving down? Skip the incredibly small parking area for McNee Ranch along Highway 1 and head another 0.2 miles south to the larger lot for Montara State Beach.
Stroll Along Point Reyes’ Limantour Beach
After an hour and a half in the car up to Point Reyes, both you and your dog will be thrilled to hit Limantour Beach. Located between Drake’s Bay and the estuary, you’ll have this wide stretch of sand all to yourself for walking or running. Just remember that you have to (well, maybe should is a better word) keep your pup on a leash the whole time. Keep an eye out for harbor seals—part of the beach is a designated protected area for them—and the migrating grey whales that pass by California this time of year. Learn more.
Inside Tip: Since you’re already so far north, make a full day of your adventure and head to the Marshall Store for amazing oysters, beer, and more beer. Oh, and maybe bring a buddy to drive you back home.
