Jambalaya and plastic beads aren’t the only things descending on the city this week. From the hallowed land of Burgundy to the City by the Bay come some of the very best vignerons; their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to be poured by leading sommeliers and paired with cuisine by our finest chefs. La Paulée, named in honor of the annual harvest celebration in France, is the All Star wine event of the year.

Imagine the meal that results from Thomas Keller, Michael Mina, Daniel Boulud and Christopher Kostow fighting for counter space in the kitchen, while the legendary wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine des Comtes Lafon demand your attention. Sadly, imagining is what most of us will have to do. Even at four figures, tickets for the formal events sell out quickly.

Fortunately for the 99 percent (okay, 90), the love of Burgundy is contagious. Many restaurants, from A16 to Zuni, will be offering special wines, from Chablis to Brouilly, by the glass. Farallon and Saison are both offering tasting menus (with pairings of course).

For those wanting to geek out on the supremacy of limestone, (7 percent of the earth's geology is limestone, and 55 percent of that is in Burgundy) now is the time. But even for those of us still grappling with the meaning of terroir and the difference between premier cru and grand cru, it’s a great opportunity to learn a little more about this small but important region of the world.
