The allure of the East Bay isn’t just about better summer weather—there are actually cultural happenings worth the trek as well, even for city dwellers spoiled by the big-name museums and galleries. Following are a few of our favorite reasons to cross the bridge this weekend:
Art Attack Open Studio at Bridgehead Studios in Alameda
The Bridgehead building was a hub for propeller manufacturing in the 1930s and 1940s. Now it's been converted to studios for both resident artists and those looking for a temporary spot for a photo shoot. This Saturday the tenants' work will be on display and the studios will be open to curious visitors. There will also be a BBQ on the roof and a fashion show at 8 pm.
Oakland Park Tours
In celebration of National Park and Recreation Month (July), the Oakland Parks and Rec department is offering tours and open houses at the city's various parks. Of particular interest this weekend is the Splash into Summer event at Lake Merritt, where the city is offering free boat rentals and tours of the Sail Boat House. Granted, Lake Merritt is a smallish, man-made lake, but it’s still fun to paddle around on, and on Saturday you can combine it with a trip to one of Oakland’s best farmer’s markets.
Wine Tasting at Oakland’s Only Downtown Winery
At the Grand Illusion Launch Party, JC Cellars will be offering tastings of 12 new wines, plus appetizers, desserts, and coffee. JC Cellars is the brainchild of former Rosenblum Cellars vintner Jeff Cohen, who now produces his own 21 bottles at a warehouse in Oakland. The downtown tasting room is a fun spot to visit any weekend (tastings are just $5 per person), but especially so during a launch.
