Sure there’s good weather and more outdoor dining in the East Bay, but the best reasons to head across the bridge are the random, unexpected finds. Following are some of our favorites for this weekend:

Treasure Island Flea Market – It only happens once a month, but the thing about having a flea market on a former naval base is that it can be huge, which means vendors can sell things like rickshaws (yes, one vendor is selling a rickshaw this weekend). You can check out the vendors and see what they’re planning to bring this weekend on the TI Flea site. In addition to all the flea market goodness, the Treasure Island market also features DIY workshops (this month you can make an origami scrapbook, tissue poms, or scented sachets), a scavenger hunt, and various food trucks.

Chabot Science Center Summer Movie Series – The Chabot Science Center is a cool little spot tucked into the Oakland hills, between two of the city’s great regional parks. Known primarily for its observatory, during the summer the center hosts a movie series every Friday and Saturday night, which includes a movie, dinner, and access to the observatory deck for some prime stargazing. This weekend the film is Inception.

Baron Baking Bagels – In the Bay Area’s ever more competitive race to create the perfect bagel, the latest entrant is the East Bay’s Baron Baking. Promising “your grandma’s bagel,” Baron Baking’s artisan, hand-rolled, organic bagels are only available at a few East Bay establishments (Saul’s in Berkeley, Chop Bar and Stag’s Lunchette in Oakland).
