Wine Country Escape: Energetic Hotel Villagio is just what Yountville needed

By

There's a new rebel in downtown Yountville, Napa Valley's most cosmopolitan—or as some might say, stuffy—destination.

Hotel Villagio has all the ingredients of Yountville's classic luxury and elegance, but with a big cup of moxie mixed in.

Formerly the Villagio Inn & Spa, Hotel Villagio is the cooler and more outgoing sister to the sophisticated Vintage House; both hotels are part of The Estate Yountville, a luxury lifestyle concept complete with restaurants and shops. Just steps away from Napa Valley's top dining establishments like The French Laundry, Bouchon, and Bottega, Hotel Villagio's multi-million dollar renovation includes one of the largest spas in Napa Valley, spacious new guest rooms, a refreshed pool, and inviting gathering spaces.

Hotel Villagio feels like home from the moment you enter the lobby. Designed like a sophisticated man cave with natural elements of wood, brick, and metal, cheeky black and white photographs adorn the walls (there's one of a group of smoking nuns), and a collection of quirky corkscrews hangs above the check-in desk.

This space was made for making new friends. Serving an epic, European-style breakfast until 11am every morning, the lobby transforms from a cozy cafe by day to Yountville's most happening, after-work gathering place by night, where visitors intermingle with the locals. Challenge your travel buddy to a game of pool, play Scrabble by the fireplace, sip seasonal craft cocktails from a copper stool in the bar and lounge, or take your party outside to the fire pits. We suggest ordering the Second Spring, made with bourbon, acorn squash, lemon, maple, and garnished with pumpkin seeds. On Friday and Saturday evenings, local vintners offer complimentary wine tastings.

The lobby's warm and cozy feeling carries over to the 113 guest rooms and 22 suites, featuring wood-burning fireplaces, outdoor balconies and decks, mahogany headboards, and faux fur throws from Restoration Hardware. Open closets and chic dressing nooks feel straight out of an MTV Cribs episode, as do the stunning marbled bathrooms with their oversized mirrors and Champagne buckets strategically placed by the soaking tubs.

Those traveling with a group can book The Villa at The Estate, a five-bedroom, rock-and-roll-style bachelor pad equipped with its own private pool and jacuzzi, chef's kitchen—with a $25,000 fridge, because, why not?—pool table, record collection, and a pair of $40,000 Hästens Swedish mattresses that guarantee the best sleep of your life. You'll have to rock-paper-scissors your friends to snag one of those.

If you go:

Hotel Villagio offers custom, one-of-a-kind experiences like a sabering class or mozzarella demo with a make-your-own pizza luncheon. Shop the boutiques at The Market Place and pop in at some of Yountville's many urban wine tasting rooms. Within walking distance from the hotel, we love Stewart Cellars, Hill Family Estate, and Silver Trident Winery, which doubles as a Ralph Lauren Home gallery. Dine at RH Yountville, the brand new and perfectly over-the-top Restoration Hardware restaurant, which serves up a killer truffle grilled cheese.
