Potrero Hill Gets A New Art Addition
Fifteen years ago, CCA's Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts opened its doors to the public as an active center for showcasing modern, cutting-edge work meant to spark discussion and interaction. This month, the gallery space makes its big move from the city's Design District to a more prime location in Potrero Hill. Designed by architect Mark Jensen, the large, gymnasium-sized space features galleries and event space.
The first shows in this shiny, new space are goodies: a dynamic showing by Paris-based collective Claire Fontaine and a five-channel video installation of Werner Herzog's Hearsay of the Soul. "Claire Fontaine: Redemptions" presents the Capp Street Project residents' installation of thousands of used cans in plastic bags, elevating them from common trash to loftier symbols of sustenance. "The Way Beyond Art 4: Infinite Screens" is the fourth installment in a series called The Way Beyond Art and examines, through a solo project and panel discussions, the relationship between Herzog's motion picture and the new context in which it is displayed.
Gallery opening reception: 7-9 p.m., Tues. 1/22, 360 Kansas St. (btwn 16th and 17th), 415-551-9210, wattis.org
