Market Watch: Order a Chef Market Basket to Help You Through the Holidays
With heavy rains last week and a cooler snap in the air, it’s finally starting to feel like winter in San Francisco. I find myself craving home-cooked meals, and I take many cues for what to cook from the chefs who shop at the market each week. These days, their carts are filled high with root vegetables, citrus, winter squash in many shapes and colors, and bright bunches of braising greens—all of which make the fixings for any number of hearty, healthy, and comforting winter dishes.
To help you through the hustle and bustle of the winter holiday season, we asked chef Jake Des Voignes of Local Mission Eatery and Local’s Corner to put together a Chef Market Basket with all the recipes and ingredients you need to make an easy three-course mid-week winter meal for four. Similar to the Everything But the Bird Chef Market Basket that we offered at Thanksgiving, this basket assembles some of the best produce the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market has to offer and can be ordered through Good Eggs.

Jake and his wife, Shauna, opened Local Mission Eatery three years ago and Local’s Corner in late spring of this year. Though his background is in fine dining, having worked at restaurants like Craft in New York and Fifth Floor in San Francisco, Jake decided on a concept that was more casual when it came time to opening his own spot. While the atmosphere at Local Mission Eatery may seem laid back, the food is a testament to Jake’s finely honed skills and love of local and seasonal ingredients, which the restaurant uses almost exclusively. “We make some exceptions for certain spices,” Jake said, “but the raw products are 100% locally sourced, and the majority of them come from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market,” where Jake shops twice a week.
Jake’s Chef Market Basket features his recipes for Root Vegetable Soup; Napa Cabbage Salad with Fresh Herbs, Pomegranate, Persimmon and Apple; and Wild Rice Risotto with Butternut Squash, Cauliflower and Sage Brown Butter. The box can be pre-ordered starting this Friday, December 7, and will be available on Tuesday, December 18, for home delivery or pickup at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Sign up for the CUESA e-letter to be notified when you can reserve your box.
