Lowering the Bar: 5 Places to Drink For Cheap (or Free) This Week

By

Each week, former sf.myopenbar.com editor Allie Pape brings you her picks for the best places to booze on the cheap in SF. This week: The holiday spirit(s). Have an event coming up? Want to share a tip? E-mail her.

1. SF Appeal Holiday Party: The SF Appeal, made up of hardworking journalists covering the issues, is a cause worthy of your support. Show them you love them by dropping in at their holiday party, where they'll have free Trumer Pils. And be careful: we journalists are pretty good at drinking. RSVP here. (Tonight, Wednesday, December 15, 7-10 pm, at PariSoMa, 1436 Howard St., SOMA.)

2. D-Structure SF Skateboarding Association Holiday Party: If your tastes run a little less towards journalism and a little more towards extreme sports, the SF Skateboarding Association's holiday party, at the shop D-Structure, might fill the bill. They'll have an open bar for three hours, and plenty of eager skaters. (Tonight, Wednesday, December 15, 8-11 pm, at D-Structure, 520 Haight St., Lower Haight.)

3. The 12 Drinks of Christmas: We love themed excuses for drinking, a category that happens to include most of the holidays, but really reaches its apex at this time of year, "The Holidays." One Market caters to our sappy desire to get smashed with a descending list of drinks, which started on the 11th and will continue until the 24th, with the price dropping by a dollar each day. Tonight, there's Gingerjack Cider for $8; on Thursday, a Bailey's Alexander for $7, and so on, until the 24th, when a grasshopper will cost a mere buck. It's limited to one type of drink per day and two drinks per person, but considering the fancy downtown environs, we're still sold. (Daily until December 25th, at One Market, 1 Market St., Embarcadero.)

4. Bad Economy Blues Bash: Another theme we enjoy getting behind is recession parties, and there's one of those this week as well. $4 Blue Ice Vodka cocktails and $3 Red Seal Ale await visitors to Solstice Lounge, plus a blues band will play for free. Have a few drinks and express your sorrows over a twelve-bar backing band. (Thursday, December 17, 5 pm-2 am, at Solstice Lounge, 2801 California St., Lower Pacific Heights.)

5. Bottomless Brunch at Panam: The continued run of cafes offering bottomless mimosas (Mercury Lounge, Sugar Cafe, Lime) is definitely an arms race we can get behind. The newest contender: Panam, the Castro's answer to the French bistro. $10 gets you a bottomless mimosa or bloody mary at brunchtime-- a perfect way to stop a hangover, or start one. (Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am to 3 pm, at Panam, 2367 Market St., Castro.)
