Three New Cafés in SF and Oakland

Three New Cafés in SF and Oakland

By

Ready to get your caffeine on? (And maybe a little something to nosh on as well?) Here are two new cafés around town, plus one you’ll want to cross the bridge for.

Andytown Coffee Roasters

The Outer Sunset has an incredibly charming new roaster and café from husband and wife Michael McCrory and Lauren Crabbe. And they both have some coffee chops: she has Blue Bottle (she was the lead barista at the Ferry Building location), Hollow, and Trouble under her belt, and he worked at Java Beach and Beachside Café. They’re roasting a variety of beans in-house, which are also for sale. Try the Snowy Plover, an espresso soda with whipped cream on top. Crabbe is Irish, which will explain the griddle-baked soda bread on the menu; lunch items are coming soon. It’s a bright space, with some surf-inspired décor, plenty of wood, and even the ceramic espresso and cappuccino cups are custom-thrown.

Opening hours (for now) are Tue–Thu 7am–12pm, Fri–Sat 7am–3pm, and Sun 8am–12pm. 3655 Lawton St. at 43rd Ave., 415-753-9775.

Jane on Larkin

A second branch of the Jane on Fillmore has now opened in the Tenderloin, serving Stumptown Coffee (pour-over or espresso), along with plenty of things to eat in the morning, including housemade pastries, a scrambled egg panino, granola, and a greens smoothie; lunch has all kinds of salads and panini. The space has a clean look, with white subway tile, dark grey wainscoting, tables with shiny Tolix chairs, and a marble counter.

Hours are Mon–Fri 7am–6pm and Sat–Sun 8am–6pm. 925 Larkin St. at Geary, 415-931-5263.

Blue Bottle Coffee, Oakland

Leave it to Blue Bottle to find another beautiful building to open a café in. This time, it’s the historic W.C. Morse building in Temescal, sporting 2,000 square feet (which is why it also hosts their repair shop and a home espresso machine showroom) and is full of light. Oh yeah, and some high-end audio equipment.  There are some fun espresso drinks, like the Italian Shakerato (espresso, ice, and simple syrup) and a Cascara Fizz (cascara tea, sparkling water, simple syrup, and a lemon wedge). You can also get some bites likes their Belgian-style waffle, Valrhona chocolate pudding, and a couple sandwiches.

Hours are Mon–Fri 7am–6pm, Sat–Sun 8am–6pm. 4296 Broadway at 42nd, Oakland.
