The Bon Vivant: Charleston Pierce, fashion show producer and modeling coach

Photo by Alex Farnum, Photo Assistants: Sonya Yruel and Carmel Cottingham

Charleston Pierce has kept his finger on the city’s fashion pulse for more than 20 years. He’s pulled together a runway show in 48 hours, and he’s even worked the catwalk with Tyra Banks. Most importantly, the Bayview native has given local models a platform on which to strut their stuff with his production company, Charleston Pierce Presents. Over the years, Pierce has learned three critical things: Always be show-ready, connect with the audience and do whatever it takes to sell the clothes. Now in his 21st season with Macy’s Passport, he’s more ready than ever to use his skill and passion to encourage budding fashionistas to practice model confidence.

What’s your best style advice that works on and off the runway?

The second you walk out of the house, the world is your runway. Wear what you like, be OK with who you are and always have a vision for what you’re aspiring to be.

What sets SF women apart from others in terms of style?
SF women play by their own rules, make their own fashion statements and are savvy on their own accord.

Favorite local shop?
I’m almost always in a suit. I get mine from Gene Hiller in Sausalito. They’ve got the best selection of Italian designers for menswear.

What I don't appreciate about what you all say he does is that its not always true. You say that he is a big supporter of the models yet he hasn't helped me one bit. I have reached out for his advice hoping he would notice that I am a better model that half those people in that photo. What saddens me is that he continues to promote models that don't even look like models. And he also continues to support one model in particular who has an eating disorder and you can tell when you see her. Plus, they use her boyfriend for shoots when he isn't even good looking let alone not even a model to begin with. So if he is such a great person than why the hell does he charge money for a walking class that is a complete scam. Why does he continue to promote old, unusable and rail thin models for his shows. What about people who actually look like models and have meat on their bones. I don't see anything but ass kissing going on. Is that what it takes, that I have to kiss his ass to get into a well known magazine for the bay area? Its pathetic. People like me work hard and get no credit. Its a pity that models who actually look like real human beings get overlooked for skinny rail thin twigs who don't even look like a model. I am never a bitter person, but I am really extremely upset that I work twice as hard as any of those models who don't deserve to be in that photo. And working with all those models, I can tell you that they only got there for sucking up. Is that what you want to be? A person who kisses ass and sucks up just to get anywhere. Why don't you actually put in the work like the rest of us, and stop wasting peoples time. I deserve more recognition and I refuse to kiss ass, and lower my standards of class just to have fifteen minutes of fame in a magazine.

You are the best producer I ever work. Always fun and nice to work with you! I love to see my jewelry designs on your amazing models always.
Congratulations!

The venue for the shoot was Victor's Palace on the 32nd floor of the Westin St Francis Hotel - awesome!

So good to see that some real fashion stories get out there.

Charleston is a great person! He exudes positive energy everywhere he goes and he's a true motivator. Nothing but respect and best wishes!!!!!!

This article only touches on half the man. Charleston is not only an amazing motivator, teacher and producer but he is a man who cares for his profession, models and friends! He is humble, grateful for every day and shares this message with anyone who needs it and is willing to listen. He inspires both young and old alike, wears his smile like a fine piece of clothing and has a heart bigger than life. Now you know the complete man that is Mr. Charleston Pierce! Oh, and Happy Birthday too! :-) Thank you for sharing the gift that is YOU!

Congrats :-) He's a great coach, professional, charming, warm personality & a great producer/coach. I've worked with him on a few shows now & I'm still amazed by each & every time. He makes SF Fashion scene a better place to be part of & proud of!

Congratulation Charles..So happy for you. You worked hard and is well deserved...

I can speak from first hand experience. Last week at the Vino Moda Fashion Show at fort mason, Charleston (as a guest) stepped back stage and started directing models down the runway. It was so adorable! He took it upon himself to make sure the models did a stellar job, and they did. Charleston is amazing, (even if he didn't recognize me without my make-up on). Congratulations!
