The Hot 20 Under 40 2010 Reader's Choice Winner

And the winners are...the doctors of UCSF's Mabuhay Health Center!

This group of renegade health professional students from UCSF and other Bay Area medical schools (all under 40) opened a free clinic last December at Bayanihan Community Center in SoMa. Now they're extending their services to the youth of SF by opening a site at Bessie Carmichael Elementary school in October, which will offer health education and free medical and dental care for students.

They'll be featured in our October Hot 20 Under 40 issue.

Take a look back at who made it through round 1, 2, 3 and 4 and congrats to the doctors at Mabuhay Health Center!

They are doing something good.

BUT

Then again so are all postal workers in SF under the age of 40. Next year I'm going to nominate all postal workers in SF under the age of 40. Or all workers at Google under the age of 40. Seems a little unfair, eh?

People voted for this group as ONE ENTITY, not the individual 14 people in the photo. It is about what they do, not the individual 14. Of course each individual person would not have gotten past the first round. They got past all the rounds and WON because of their GROUP and what the mission of the GROUP entails.

It is called VOTING and READERS' CHOICE for a reason. Just FYI. If you don't agree, that's because you have a different opinion. That's fine, but don't let your soreness cloud over the people that won and actually make a difference.

Wow! Thank you all for your kind words. MHC is a realization of a dream for some of us. We need not be on a cover of a magazine because we all simply just want to make a difference. We are humbled for the support we've received. We still have a lot of work ahead of us. Congratulations also to those who have been nominated in this contest!
Have a pleasant day everyone! Peace....

In the future you should have separate contests for indiviuals and groups. If you divided by 14 the number of votes received by this group, would any one of them have won? They are nevertheless doing something great - just not appropriate winners for this contest.

It would be appropriate to separate the contest into individuals and groups. If you divide the total votes received by the group by the 14 individuals it represents, are they STILL the winners?

are all the finalist in the print October issue?

Brilliant idea: "Perhaps it would be a good idea to profile the top 5 or top 10 nominees in the magazine as well?"

I don't understand how they won with 2,512 votes - I voted for them at least 5,000 times or 357 times for each person in the pic. OK, to be honest I voted for the chicks a few extra times.

It is obvious that from the numbers, 2511 votes, that as individuals none would probably have gotten past the first round. I'm giving up on 7x7 and telling my friends to boycott your publication until the true individual winner is announced

Perhaps it would be a good idea to profile the top 5 or top 10 nominees in the magazine as well?

recount demanded!!

This is not a true reflection of the reader's choice...but a contest of numbers.

I don't think anyone believes that the UCSF people don't deserve credit, just not in this contest. Sure they are bettering a small community, but you've got two single contestants who are aiming to help multiple non-profits and feed entire continents of starving children. Not only that, but they are beautifying the world with their design and production skills.

If these UCSF people were actively working to better health care in the entire United States they might be able to hang with these designers who are putting their heart and soul into bettering the world.

Thanks for your comments and concerns on the Hot 20 nomination and voting process. We always appreciate feedback from our readers. Every year, we have Hot 20 Under 40 honorees who are groups, couples or teams who are doing something to shake things up in the city. In the last few years, for example, we've featured the Twitter founders, Brooklyn Circus, the founders of Meraki and the brains behind ad agency Pereira & O’Dell. (Check out last year's full Hot 20 Under 40 class here). We had a group of extremely inspiring nominees this year. 2,513 people voted in final round for the health professionals of Mabuhay Health Center, making them the 2010 Reader's Choice Winner. We're thrilled to be highlighting a group of people who are helping to revolutionize medical care in San Francisco.

this seems to be a very unfair contest to the 2 people who were alone, and now an entire group has won? That should be a separate contest all together.

This award should go to the founder of the Mabuhay Health Center (apparently there is one, some doctor from UCSF). The award should go to him. Nevertheless, the award is well deserved.

really??? no offense, but they were the least attractive of the bunch!

What's with all the sore losers?

Per one of the founders:
the description is a bit inaccurate because we are not all UCSF doctors. We are both pre-health students from Bay Area universities and UCSF health professional students representing multiple disciplines - medicine, pharmacy, dental, re...search, and health education.

Regardless, they are young and driven individuals who brings grass-root change and betterment to overlooked communities. Well-deserved, keep up the great work.

It's great that people who are really making a difference in people's lives won! I was blown away by how many of the nominees were not doing anything to benefit the world, though I'm sure they're fine people. Kudos doctors--may next year's batch of nominees be as great as you!

Really? Lame.
So...20 people lobbied their friends and family to vote for them instead of just one candidate. They should get an award/recognition for the work they're doing...but really? Hot 20 under 40? pffffft.

so lame.

BOYCOTTING 7x7 for not following rules.

Awesome that the doctors won. These people are making a difference and this is very well deserved indeed! Good to know that this is not just a popularity contest and those who won actually deserved this!

what an unfair contest. This isn't 1 person. This contest is for 1 PERSON!

How is it fair that a group of people win? 20 people against one? I'm disappointed 7x7....

Congratulations! Well deserved.

Seriously?!
