Kurt Vile & the Soft Pack Co-Headline @ Rickshaw Stop Tonight

Worlds colliding isn't always a bad thing. Case in point: tonight's co-headlining show at Rickshaw Stop between the psychedelic Crazy Horse stylings of Kurt Vile & the Violators and the airtight SoCal surf pop of the Soft Pack. Who knows? Maybe they'll even join forces on stage to play some psychedelic surf pop. Everbody wins!

As someone who has seen Kurt Vile perform (both solo and with the Violators) more times than I can count on one hand, it's safe to say I'm pretty much a die hard fan of this dude from Philly who can really rip your head apart with loud, smoldering guitar lines and wailing, fuzzy feedback melting all over them, not to mention his Jim Morrison vocals. It's a brooding brand of highway music perfect for these daylight savings-inflicted times.

Opener Purling Hiss, also from Philadelphia, wails on guitars that hiss with attitude (true to its name) and the swagger of the man behind this band, Mike Polizze, is hard to ignore. Heavy riffs, crashing cymbals and a voice bubbling up from the ether makes this music sexy and bluesy, straight from the unhinged rock and roll madness of the 70s. Polizze's album Public Service Announcement (Woodsist) sounds like a dusty gem you trumphantly grabbed from the depths of Amoeba's vinyl section. On stage, it'll only sound more rough and ready. Can't wait.
