Five Awesome Tahoe Breakfast Spots

By

People come to the Tahoe area for a million reasons– its world-class skiing and snowboarding resorts, its mountain biking terrain, its vista-strewn hiking trails, its top-notch golf courses, its abundant lake and stream fishing, or to laze away the day, sitting lakeside in a beach chair.

But these varied visitors all have one thing in common: They need a decent breakfast to get them through their daily Big Blue adventures. Here are five suggestions on where to get a great start on your day in Tahoe.

Ernie's Coffee Shop is a family-owned operation – the Brusos have run the place since 1981 – that is as much revered among locals for its friendly service as it is for its great food. Ernie's omelets and scrambles are among the best around the lake; also check out its "Healthy Waist Watchers" and "Vegan Delight" options. 1207 Emerald Bay Road (Highway 89) in South Lake Tahoe

Firesign Cafe makes what many believe is the best Eggs Benedict at the Lake. Another thing going for it: It's probably the only place around that has charbroiled Kielbasa and eggs on its regular menu. 1785 West Lake Boulevard (Highway 89) in Tahoe City

Log Cabin has the coolest building around: An actual log cabin. Inside, the cozy atmosphere and great food – check out the variety of scrambles, the french toast tower or the salmon eggs Benedict – have locals and tourists alike coming back for more on a regular basis. 8692 North Lake Boulevard (Highway 28) in Kings Beach

The Red Hut Cafe, which has three locations in the South Lake Tahoe area (go to redhutcafe.com to find each restaurant), has been a local institution since 1959. Its "greasy spoon" ambiance, abundant portions (its thick slabs of bacon are a treat), attractive prices and walls laden with memorabilia make the Red Hut a classic breakfast joint.

Squeeze In is THE place to go if you are hankering for an omelet (the place has actually trademarked the phrase Best Omelettes On The Planet). The menu has 66 different omelet options, many of them distinctly creative or unusual; try the Lake Taco or the Trippy Thomas for something different. Don't forget to order one of their signature mimosas. 10060 Donner Pass Road in downtown Truckee
