Meter kiosks, found in many cities including San Francisco and other parts of the Bay area, are centralized meters that accept payment for designated parking spaces in the immediate area. These centralized meters are replacing the older meters at individual parking spaces. Meter kiosks accept payment for all the nearby parking spaces on the block. You put money in the machine (which usually takes credit cards and special parking cards, as well as cash) and get a receipt, which you put on your dash board facing up, so that the time at which you paid for parking and the amount of time you paid for are clearly visible.
Parking meter revenue made $38 million within the fiscal 12 months that finished June 30. Earnings from expired parking meter penalties earned almost $29 million more, according to the San Francisco MTA. The money helps fund the Muni transportation system.
The findings, outlined in a new survey released by the Board of Supervisors' legislative analyst, comes as the Municipal Transportation Agency is extending the number of metered curbside spaces. The report, requested by Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, compared San Francisco with other major cities and discovered that only Chicago and Los Angeles charge more to park at a town center parking meter, and that San Francisco charges the highest rate outside of the downtown core. In addition, San Francisco equalled only New York City within the highest meter violation fine, the report found.

How about a driveway complaint ticket? I got dinged $90 for that the other day, and I was all of 2 inches in their driveway.

On Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Year’s Day you won’t get a regular parking citation unless you park on Port Authority property (Fisherman’s Wharf, The Embarcadero, etc.), where meters are enforced 7 days a week 365 days a year. On the Fourth of July you will only get a ticket for 7 day street sweeping or an expired meter, but not for a 2 hour residential zone or commuter tow away zone violation.
