Five Ways to Break a Sweat Before You Wine Taste

Playing hard over the weekend means working out even harder come Monday. But if you’re the type who’d rather skip the gym, some folks in Wine Country have a better idea. How about a workout with your wine? 


Velo Vino Napa Valley

The same folks that bring you Clif Bars, want to roll through wine country with you. Velo Vino rides are held the second Saturday of the month through October. Rides leave at 9 a.m. from the Velo Vino back patio. Distances range from 20 to 40 miles. Pre-ride espresso and Clif Bars are available, tasting is available post-ride. Helmets are required, RSVP’s appreciated online or by phone, 707-968-0625. Free.

Ladera Vineyards

If you’re not into groups and looking to do something own your own, check out Ladera Vineyards “Cycle the Road Less Traveled.” When you arrive at the winery, bikes, helmets and a map will be waiting for you. Take your time cycling in and around Angwin before returning to Ladera for a picnic and taste of their limited production wines. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the winery at 707-965-2445. $125 per person.

Wine Country Cyclery

If you’re looking for a self guided tour with options to taste wine from more than one winery, head to Wine Country Cyclery. They’ll set you up with bikes, helmets, locks and a map. They have a popular 12 mile route that includes stops at five wineries including Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery and Ravenswood. Longer routes are available if you're looking for more distance.They’ll also let you know if any of the tasting rooms have any specials, like 2 for 1 tastings. Bike rental reservations recommended, especially on weekends. 707-996-6800. Prices vary depending on type of bike rented.

Stony Hill Vineyard

You don’t have to be on a bike to fit in a workout in wine country. “Hike through the Vines” at Stony Hill Vineyard with Proprietor Sarah McCrea and winery pup, Milo. Spend about three hours exploring the 160-acre property, enjoy a post-hike picnic then head inside the Stony Hill winery for a behind the scenes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon barrel tasting. Hikes are customizable, so you can decide how intense you want your workout to be. Reservations are required at least two weeks in advance, 707-963-2636. $100 per person.

Vineyard 29

It’s Pilates, TRX and Barre classes with a view. Napa Valley’s Vineyard 29 and Pilates Proworks have created Proworks29. The day starts on Vineyard 29’s veranda with an hour workout class of your choice. Once the hard part’s done, tour the winery before lunch is served. You can go healthy or indulge, but plan on tasting. The ProWorks29 program is available to groups of 6 to 12 people, by reservation only. Classes must be booked at least two weeks in advance. 707-963-9292. $150 a person.
