Sometimes we have to travel to such mystical lands as the Mission or Pac Heights to find a suitable candidate for the weekly Street Style Report. Other times, we just have to look around 7x7's SoMa office. Enter: 7x7 intern Jessica Trou.
Name: Jessica Trou
Hometown: San Jose
What are you wearing?
I'm wearing an Innocent World jumperskirt and an Alice and the Pirates blouse, both secondhand. My shoes are from Irregular Choice and my socks are from Ebay. My hat is a gift from a friend.
You have a Harujuku look, yes? Can you tell us more about your overall style?
Yes, I closely follow Japanese street fashion. I tend to go for more gothic or classic styling choices, but toned down so that it's easy to wear every day.
Who are your influences?
I admire a lot of major designers such as Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, but also some smaller brands like Juliette et Justine and Millefleurs. I'm also influenced a lot by people in my local fashion community.
Do you always wear black?
Yes, I only own black.
Do you ever depart from this look and go for something really different?
Not really! For my part-time job I have to wear a t-shirt and jeans, but other than that I try to wear these kinds of clothes every day.
What, if at all, do you wear casual on weekends?
Sometimes I will wear more casual J-fashion clothes, such as morikei (which is a kind of boho look that is influenced by the feeling of being in a forest), but I do have just tees and things for not going out in.
What are your interests?
I'm interested in fashion history and pop culture.
What kind of career are you seeking?
I'm currently majoring in fashion design.
Where can you buy these kinds of clothes?
In San Francisco, you can go to Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, which is in Japantown, and Harajuku Hearts, which is downtown. I also recommend miss-harajuku.com, which is a local online consignment shop. Having the stores so close by is a big deal, because for a long time, they were the only places in the US you could buy them (and there are only a handful of stores outside of Japan), although they are currently opening a store in NY.
