7x7 checks in with a member of the local film scene and takes their temperature. This week, we chat with Oakland-based film producer Jon Duffy.
What do you do?
I am a fundraiser, entrepreneur and independent film producer. I have produced two feature length narrative films. The first film, Pit Stop, premiered at Sundance in 2013. It went on to have a wonderful festival run including two screenings here in the Bay Area during Frameline. Kat Candler's Hellion, the second film I've produced, will be premiering at Sundance on January 17. It stars Aaron Paul of "Breaking Bad," Juliette Lewis, and a few other faces you might recognize.
What are you working on?
Right now my producing partner Kelly Williams and I are just enjoying the moment. Having a film at Sundance has always been a dream. Being able to achieve that dream last year and to go back this year is just really special for us and the whole team.
What do you like best about working in the Bay?
I think the greatest thing about working here is the innovative spirit that just seems to be omnipresent. There are so many smart people here doing that thing that they are really passionate about. It's inspiring. The very best thing about being involved in the film community is having the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with people like Michele Turnure-Salleo and others from the San Francisco Film Society. They have an incredible passion for supporting independent filmmakers. I would like to say 'thank you' to Jen Rainin and the Kenneth Rainin foundation for their support of Hellion, and for her commitment to supporting the arts here in the Bay Area.
Hellion premieres at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah next week.
