When a woman's uniform consists of a turban, you know she's a force. Once in a while, a notable book comes along providing insight into the life of an influential person in fashion. One of my favorite fashion biographies is about the fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar and editor-in-chief of Vogue, "D.V. Diana Vreeland."
This fall, the favorite is a dedication to world-renowned American press agent Eleanor Lambert.
Authored by John Tiffany, Lambert's assistant and fashion historian, “Eleanor Lambert: Still Here,” starts at the beginning of the trailblazer's 100 years and dips into her personal and professional lives.
Here are just a few of her accomplishments: She founded the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), she started the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and initiated the idea of the Costume Institute Gala, and she created the International Best Dressed List, now led by Vanity Fair magazine. And in the simplest, she helped designers understand the power of PR and how it can put them on the map.
Lambert once said: “Taste is a sharpened eye for the beautiful, the interesting, and the unusual — coupled with the talent to apply all of these to one's life.” The 320 page book also showcases American fashion in the 20th century through iconic photography of Halston, Bill Blass, Giorgio di Sant’Angelo, and other designer greats.
This week, the author will make two appearances in the Bay Area where Tiffany will be available for discussions and book signings.
