Schroeder’s, SF's Oldest German Beer Hall, Reopens This Week


San Francisco’s oldest and largest German beer hall Schroeder's has been restored to its former glory, following a four-month renovation. New owners Jan Wiginton and Andy Chun of Press Club San Francisco fame re-opened the 120-year old restaurant Monday. 

The 5,000 square foot space retains its centerpiece rosewood bar, original millwork, and historic 1930’s Herman Richter murals. The updated floors, communal furnishings, and lighting complement Schroeder’s signature features, and the floor to ceiling, glass façade entrance brings in natural light and warmth.

Schroeder’s menu remains German-focused, though it's been updated to take advantage of local, seasonal ingredients. Chef Manfred Wrembel, formerly of Incanto and Plum, will be preparing contemporary versions of German classics like trout, Wiener schnitzel, and spätzle, and also showcasing housemade sausages and pickles. Bar bites include pork cracklins, a mixed variety of pickled local vegetables, and pickled eggs with housemade spicy mustard.

Beverage Director Mauro Cirilli, who also serves as Press Club’s Sommelier, has selected mostly Austrian and German wines for the menu, along with a few comparable varietals produced in California. Local Master Cicerone Rich Higgins has selected 22 international brews for tap and bottle, featuring German, Czech, and Belgian beers, plus a few local craft brews that pair well with the food. You can also rent a beer stein locker to showcase your humpen and have it at hand when you need it most.

Claire Jane Hunter, who joins the team from Rye and Future Bars, has created a cocktail program that focuses on premium artisan producers from across the globe, and expertly crafted cocktails made with housemade syrups, tonics, and tinctures. Expect an updated take on classic German drinks, including beer cocktails.

In keeping with the importance of tradition, many of Schroeder’s activities will continue, including the best Oktoberfest in San Francisco, as well as St. Patrick’s Day, and Christmas celebrations.

Opening week will be dinner service only, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Regular hours start next week: Mon. - Fri. 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sat. 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. 240 Front St
