Wine for Mavericks

Memoirs From an Urban Farm
On Thursday, June 18, farmer Novella Carpenter will be chatting with Michael Pollan about her recent book Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. The inspiring memoir chronicles her experience transforming a vacant lot in Oakland into a working urban farm. Join them at the First Congregational Church is Berkeley (2345 Channing Way) from 7:30 to 10 p.m.; tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.

Serious chocolate freaks should plan to attend Michael Recchiuti’s class, Chocolate Obsession 2—Serious Chocolate, on June 20 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. This master class in chocolate confection techniques, taught by an absolute expert in the field, will cover tempering, molding and enrobing, and admission includes a copy of Recchiuti’s book, Chocolate Obsession. Looking for a true taste of Italy? Learn how to make your own nocino, a liqueur made from green walnuts. On June 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. Slow Food Berkeley member Arrigo Benedetti will teach you how to make your own bottle of this digestif, native to the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. Raise a Glass
The sixth annual Golden Glass Wine event will again take up residence at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion on June 21 from 2 to 6 p.m.. Steady your glass—there will be over 100 sustainably-produced wines on offer, as well as snacks from A16, Slow Club, Heaven’s Dog and many, many more. They’re calling it a Mariquita Marathon—on Sunday, June 21, Mariquita farmers Andy Griffin and Julia Wiley will be contributing a giant vegetable bounty of the Piccino kitchen. The cooks will then prepare an a la carte feast—pizzas, salads and other delicious surprises. Stop in between noon and 9 p.m. to sample some fresh from the farm fare.
