Shadows and the shoes of the SF Fire and Police Department members create an interesting pattern on the Civic Center ground in the noon-day sun.

Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White makes her way through the crowd and greets members of the Fire Dept.

A single silent protester stands with his message.

Mayor Ed Lee and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi both spoke at Saturday's event. Pelosi mentioned that she was flying out of SFO immediately to NYC to attend the memorial there too.

Hung between two fire truck ladders a giant US flag hangs over Civic Center.

One of the roughly 100 members of the public that attended the service, a young boy holds a firefighter/paramedic helmet during the ceremony.

Mayor Ed Lee, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Police Chief  Greg Suhr stand as the Color Guard makes their way onto the stage.

The drum and bagpipe band makes their way off the grounds as the ceremony is brought to an end.
