Live Music This Week: Tool, Tower of Power, and More

Time to dance/air-guitar/head bang/twerk off all that holiday cheer. If the gym’s not your thing, get your New Year workout on at these choice shows.

Thursday: Goodnight, Texas at Independent

Former Stone Foxes instigator Avi Vinocur teamed up with Patrick Dyer Wolf three years ago to form Goodnight, Texas, a folk-rock outfit that lives up to its evocative name. Tracks such as “Jesse Got Trapped in the Coal Mine” and “Hayride” sound like the kind of twang that surfaces in Austin dive bars, but San Francisco has embraced the local band. If you’ve ever been to a Stone Foxes show, you’ll know to expect a frenzied, hyper-loyal crowd. // $15; doors open at 7:30pm, show at 8pm; 628 Divisadero. Get tickets here

Wednesday & Thursday: Tool at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

Tool in the flesh! The band reports that they have “20 potential song ideas”— but this concert is sure to focus on the golden oldies. Band member Adam Jones is referring to it as an “unparalleled sonic and visual experience.” This is all a very, very big deal because the band hasn’t released an album in 10 years. Heads will explode. // $85; 8pm, 99 Grove St. Get tickets here

Friday: Rhadoo at Public Works

Get to know the sounds of the Eastern European club scene Friday at Public Works. Rhadoo, billed as “one of the most familiar names of the Romanian clubbing scene,” has been around the bloc (get it?) for some 20 years, shuffling between aliases (he has five) and parties. His sound is polished by now, but it somehow sounds as fresh as ever. // $12; Doors open at 9pm, show ends at 4am; 161 Erie St. Get tickets here

Friday, Saturday & Sunday: Tower of Power at Yoshi's Jazz Club

Tower of Power is currently on tour to celebrate their 48th anniversary. If you can believe it, almost-half a century was barely been enough time for the Oakland orchestra to record 18 studio albums, seven live albums, six compilations, and three DVDs. The band has also recorded with the likes of Elton John, Phish, Aerosmith, Santana, Heart, and basically anyone that was anyone in the last 48 years. Here’s to another 48! // $48, various dates and times, 510 Embarcadero West (Oakland). Get tickets here

Saturday: State Line Empire at Slim's

Do you like sugary pop punk? Give State Line Empire a try! // $16, Doors open at 8pm, show at 9pm, 333 11th St. Get tickets here
