Elite Sand Sculptors Carve San Francisco

Elite Sand Sculptors Carve San Francisco

By

Next week, Carve San Francisco is bringing together world renowned sculptors to do something decidedly low tech by Bay Area standards… sculpt sand. But these are not the sand castles of your youth.

Each sculpture contains 12 tons (yes, tons!) of sand. The artists will create modern, abstract, surreal, and literal carvings and, were it not for the medium, their work could hold its own in the De Young or SF MOMA.

The sculptors, representing Singapore, Canada, The Netherlands, Korea, and the US will be sculpting outside near Sports Basement in the Presidio with the Golden Gate Bridge backdrop in the distance.

"We wanted to invite accomplished sculptors to San Francisco, provide a spectacular backdrop and accommodations, and see what unfolds," said Kathryn Keown, a member of Hub Strategy, an award winning creative ad agency and creators of Carve San Francisco. "It's rare to be able to dedicate a week of your life to the pursuit of beauty."

The artists also get to enjoy accommodations from Elite Travive, a company famous for providing bespoke luxury villas in some of the most beautiful and artistic cities in the world.

The sand sculpture competition will be judged, led by Lawrence Noble, Chairman of the Sculpture Department at Academy of Art University and famous for creating the Yoda Fountain for George Lucas in the Presidio.

Carve takes place October 18 - 20 and is free to the public. Attendees can enjoy a myriad of activities including test driving the latest smart cars, sipping Finlandia cocktails, Kona Beer and Longboard Wines, playing in a giant sand box, complimentary yoga class with Rusty Wells, sampling snacks from Ocean's Halo and Dole,  and winning luxury vacations courtesy of All Cruise Travel, Pleasant Holidays and AAA Travel.

Fri - Sun, 10/18 - 10/20. Go to www.carvesf.com for more details.
