Ride with Pride: Four Ways to Get Your “Byke” Pride on This Month
It’s June, meaning the gay high holy days are upon us. For San Francisco queers, there are more homo-centric activities and parties than you can wave a rainbow flag at. For bike loving queers, there are an equal number of pedal-centric pride activities. From rainbow bike rides, to LGBTQ bike parties to queer bike education classes, here are just a few of the “byke” pride activities scheduled this month. Feel free to add more in the comments section below:
Different Spokes Group Ride: This LGBT Cycling Club hosts their monthly club ride this Saturday. Pedal your way from San Francisco to Tiburon together—on the newly improved Golden Gate Bridge bike path.
Saturday, June 9; Meet at Peets Coffee in the Castro; 8:30 am.
SF Bicycle Coalition LGBTQ Meet and Mingle: Join the SFBC for an after work party for queer and queer ally bike lovers. Great raffle prizes, including a messenger bag with local drag queen Juanita Moore’s face on it. Free bicycle valet provided, so nice folks will watch your steed while you chat up that cutie you’ve seen in the bike lane.
Thursday, June 14; El Rio; 6:30-8:00 pm.
WTF: Women, Trans, Femme Intro to Safe Biking Class: Yours truly will be teaching this one hour intro class on biking in San Francisco. Learn about route finding, rules of the road, how to lock your bike safely, and other SF riding info. Space is limited, so RSVP for the free class.
Tuesday, June 19; Good Vibrations (1620 Polk St.); 6:30-7:30 pm.
LGBTQ History Bike Tour: Take a spin through San Francisco’s queer history on this 10-mile bike ride. Learn the history of the gay Polk Gulch, find North Beach’s original homo hangouts and understand how the Castro came to be—and do it all from the seat of your bike.
Saturday, June 23; Meet at the base of the cupid’s arrow on the Embarcadero (Embarcadero and Folsom Streets); 12:45 pm.
