Next time you're in the mood for a tipple, pay tribute to our fair City with these SF-inspired cocktails.
Karl the Fog, Blustem Brasserie
Don't be fooled, you won't find any fog in this drink (head to La Urbana for The Coldest Summer if that's what you want), instead, Karl the Fog at Bluestem Brasserie is your go-to drink when the clouds roll into town. A mix of brandy, benedictine, frangelico, coffee liqueur, brewed coffee, and tasty toasted marshmallow meringue, this cocktail is sure to warm you right up. And Karl, if you're reading this, the folks at Bluestem really want to have you in to taste your namesake drink.
Sangre de Pampanito, Canela
The historic, war-laden USS Pampanito sits perched at San Francisco’s Maritime Park Association. The Spanish cocktail inspired by the mighty ship features White Spanish Vermouth, soju, kimchee, squid ink, tomato juice with sea salt, and smoked pimento rim – a visual depiction of the long history and "sangre" of Pampanito.
The Coldest Summer, La Urbana
San Francisco is no stranger to unexpected, chilly nights and to pay homage, La Urbana offers The Coldest Summer – an equally chilling cocktail. To make it, bartender Trent Simpson pours mezcal over dry ice to create the illusion of the city's relentless fog. Intensified with eucalyptus and other Bay Area botanicals to mimic the scent of the fog rolling in, this cocktail is the perfect indulgence sure to warm your soul, regardless of the weather outside.
Tessie Wallbanger, Bartlett Hall
Tessie Wall was an American madam who owned and operated brothels in San Francisco from 1898 to 1917. She was married to gambler and political boss Frank Daroux—whom she attempted to kill in 1917 when he asked for a divorce. In 1898, she opened her first brothel – ostensibly a "boarding-house"- at 211 O'Farrell Street. Her namesake cocktail— a powerful mix of vodka, lemon, carrot syrup, IPA beer— is something she would have drank on the regular.
Chinatown Sparkler, E&O Asian Kitchen
True to its San Francisco roots and inspired Asian cuisine, the E&O offers an aptly named Chinatown Sparkler made with cava, housemade strawberry shrub, and bitters.
Anything on the new menu, Trick Dog
Rather than parade around the city in search of the perfect SF-themed tipple you can always just head to Trick Dog, where the new menu features cocktails named after pretty much every iconic landmark: The Dragon Gate, Mission Dolores, and even the Golden Hydrant. Get 'em while you can though, the Mission bar is known to switch up their menus frequently.
