An underground venue, long home to quieter private events, is emerging from the shadows as Social Hall SF. Look for public concerts and big events this fall.

On Sept. 12, Goldenvoice will unveil the newly revamped 600-person basement venue, now called Social Hall SF, at The Regency Center—that pretty white building on the corner of Sutter and Van Ness that already houses the popular Regency Ballroom on its main floor. 

Previously dubbed Sutter Room, the space has housed private events, think weddings and silent auctions, for years. But with its concert business going strong, promoter Goldenvoice has invested in upgrades to bring the venue into the mainstream.

Social Hall SF, once used as a Masonic Temple in the 1900s, will have a cool underground vibe thanks to its low ceilings, a new 40-foot wooden bar, and the fact that it is, indeed, underground. Graceful archways, meanwhile, give it classic ballroom charm. 

But according to Goldenvoice VP Paul Billings, it is the venue's production quality that will set it apart. Billings says the stage was extended be larger than the one at Great American Music Hall, and further brags on the brand new sound system and ample lighting. “So far, people have been pleasantly surprised with the amount of production we brought into a smaller club space,” he says.

Help break in the new digs when drag act Alaska Thunderfuck takes the stage on Saturday, Sept. 12. While most shows here will be open to all ages, this performance is for 18 and up. The venue will house around 150 acts per year, with LOUDPVCK and Neon Indian on deck. You can find a full calendar here.
