Private saunas, sleep programs, and restorative tech: These new NorCal wellness experiences are peak luxury.

By

Luxury wellness is entering its next phase, one in which privacy and rest are prioritized over all else.

With the bespoke suites and specially designed packages at these Northern California resorts, you get more than just a communal spa experience and a soft bed to lay your head at night. From private saunas and cold plunges to essential tools for maximum rest curated by a sleep specialist, these new experiences are the gold standard in total mind-and-body rejuvenation.

When it comes to luxury wellness, Carneros Resort & Spa is at the head of the pack. They’ve set aside two cottages for their new Wellness Suite, a 900-square-foot space with a 1,000-square-foot outdoor patio complete with a private two-person sauna, a cold-plunge tub, outdoor showers, and a firepit. Inside, rest is the priority, with a smart Bryte Balance mattress, sound machine, sleep masks, blackout curtains, organic sleep tea, and weighted blankets at the ready. There’s also a soaking tub, heated slate floors, and a Vitamin C showerhead in the spacious primary bath, and features like air purifiers and yoga mats are the cherry on top.

You can leave the suite to participate in one of the hotel’s daily yoga, meditation, or fitness classes, of course—as well as to use its 3,000-square-foot fitness center—but for a little extra cash you don’t have to: they’ll install a Peloton bike before your arrival or set up a yoga instructor to give you a private session. Same with dining. You could have a meal at FARM or Boon Fly Cafe, or you can order off a special, healthful in-room dining menu with eats like Thai lettuce wraps and chickpea panisse. Your room comes already stocked with fresh-pressed Mind + Body juices and nutritious minibar items. While you’ll have to head to the spa for facials and body scrubs, they’ll send you a masseuse for an exquisite in-room treatment on request.

Timber Cove Resort has taken a different approach to their new wellness space. The Reset & Restore Suite is more private day spa than all-inclusive overnight experience—you’ll have to return to your own charmingly rustic guest room overnight. But the time you spend inside, which can range from 60 minutes to a full eight hours, will be oh so dreamy. The suite is stocked with a zero-gravity recliner, Normatec dynamic air compression boots, a Hypervolt percussion massager, and a Venom 2 heated wrap for muscle recovery. Its traditional rock sauna heats to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, and the cold plunge is a nervous-system boosting 37 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s also a rain shower, plush robes and slippers, essential oil-infused cold towels, complimentary herbal teas and fruit, a curated frequency playlist, and wellness books to read. The suite is ideal for individuals and guests, but it can also be rented by small groups.

You’ll have more than just sweet dreams with Post Ranch Inn’s Sleep Package. Devised by “The Sleep Doctor,” clinical psychologist Michael J. Breus, this two-night experience includes a 60-minute spa treatment from the “Sleep Menu” (think Ayurvedic sleep nutrition or a healing guided journey), on-demand access to a seven-part video series made just for the resort on improving and maximizing sleep, and a gift bag full of goodies like natural sleep spray, sleep glasses, a silk sleep mask, guava leaf tea, organic Big Sur flower mist, and more. Since what you eat can play an essential role in preparing the body for sleep, they’ve also put together special menus at onsite restaurant Sierra Mar with ingredients specially selected to encourage relaxation, like vitamin- and omega-rich yellowfin tuna with avocado and garden kale, and roasted guinea hen (high in magnesium and tryptophan) with delicata squash, farro, and dried apricots.
