Most of the Bay Area's indoor gyms and fitness studios have reopened since closures due to Covid, but the spike in cases thanks to Omicron means mask mandates are back, too. An outdoor workout may be our best bet for breaking a (non-virtual) sweat till this pandemic taps out.

The local fitness community has plenty of alfresco options for keeping fit, including outdoor bootcamps, boxing, yoga, spin, and reformer classes to keep you in tip-top shape. The occasional bridge view doesn't hurt, either.


Expect safety precautions—the physical release will be worth it.

Outdoor Bootcamp Workouts in San Francisco

Revision Athletics

If you didn't give Revision's outdoor-only fitness classes a try pre-pandemic, now's the perfect chance. Each site-specific class has a different focus. On Mondays, stop by Kezar Stadium for a cardio-focused endurance class; visit Aquatic Park for a Beach and Bleachers class on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and work your entire body outside Crissy Field Center on Fridays. 17th Street Athletic Club

Join 50-minute or hour-long bootcamp-style classes at Dolores Park and Twin Peaks. Walk or run your way through the cardio portion of class, and use your surroundings as equipment for full-body strength-building moves. Bring your own resistance band for an extra burn, and don't forget a mask. The Boombox

The Boombox is taking its high-energy fitness classes outside. Expect 45 minutes of moves during traditional bootcamp and TRX classes. Equipment is regularly sanitized and participants are well spaced. Don't forget your mat. Barry's Bootcamp

LuxFit

With open air classes in Hayes Valley and at the new downtown SF community space Crossing at East Cut, LuxFit is committed to providing members with strength-building training while allowing trainers to set their own group and private session prices. Opt for conditioning-centric StrongFit to get your sweat on with kettlebells and dumbbells, Boxing Roadwork for an endurance workout with plenty of punches, or Flex and Flow for 40 minutes of HIIT followed by yoga flow. Social Fit Club

You'll find Social Fit Club within the multi-purpose SoMa gathering spot District Six. Check out various offerings like full-body strength training seshes with Graylon Sanders (of Priime Fitness) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, plus special offerings like DEKA Strong, a day-long challenge featuring 20 functional fitness stations. Koi Fitness

If you're looking for individually paced, encouraging group workouts and you're in it for the long haul (aka six weeks), sign up for Koi Fitness' outdoor bootcamp classes held at Baker Beach or Golden Gate Park's Bandshell and Carousel. Axé Oakland

Head to the top of the Montclair parking garage or the CruFit patio for a socially distanced workout with CruFit. Get your heart rate up and build strength with HIIT and functional movements using both body weight and accessories—think resistance bands and jump ropes (bring your own). Glow Yoga is best known for its endless yogic offerings, but if you're in the mood to escape Zoom for the day, the studio's Scenic Stairs class is not to be missed. Meet at Cafe Trieste for coffee, then power walk up the Coit Tower stairs for a culminating core and stretch sequence with epic views. Even before the coronavirus, we all loved Outdoor Yoga SF's community-centric, silent disco alfresco classes. Let go of your stress at Third Street Boxing's outdoor parklet, complete with Aqua training bags.
