Locked & Loaded: The Blue Bottle Debacle, A Reflection of the City at its Worst
Photo by Scott Beale / Laughing Squid
"Wow, that is not going to be charming and innocuous." With that revelation from Blue Bottle founder and co-owner James Freeman, there will be no Blue Bottle in Dolores Park. Freeman told us on the phone that he had decided to pull the plug given the fierce opposition he faced. Threats to bring thousands of people out to spit on employees (see the comments) on opening day, apparently, were more than he felt like dealing with. His investment in a trailer and new employees, he says, will go elsewhere. "We'll find somewhere else to park it and find room for my crew."
And so Blue Bottle is out. Freeman will relocate his employees and trailer, and he says, contrary to reports he isn't opening in Golden Gate Park either.
Personally, I'm extremely disappointed that things ended as they did. I don't care whether it was Blue Bottle, or another vendor, but that a local business with good intent was shut down via intimidation and threats of violence is shocking and sad. Why did things come to this?
Here are what appear to be the main points of opposition:
The process wasn't transparent and the neighborhood wasn't given enough time to reply.
This is the argument with the most merit, and best case. Clearly, Parks and Rec should have done more outreach to local businesses. That they were taken by surprise seems a departmental failure. However, even this argument fails to take into account how long and public the process was.
Parks and Rec announced the request for proposal last summer. The San Francisco Chronicle ran a story about the change to Park and Rec pushcart policy in July 2009. The Chronicle reported that Blue Bottle had been awarded one of the six slots in February 2010. There was ample opportunity to oppose the location via legitimate channels, rather than threatening to spit on employees once it had been fully through the approval process.
There should be no vending in the parks.
Ignore, for a moment, that there is already vending in the park—lots of it—all of which is as pure a form of free market capitalism as exists, given that none of the vendors have to comply with health codes or pay rent or taxes to the city. But there is another argument in favor of vending in the parks as well: Controlled vending makes urban parks better. William Whyte's extensive and oft-cited studies of the urban park, "The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces," found that food vendors are essential ingredients in the urban park setting and tend to attract more people and improve their experience. (And perhaps the aforementioned illegal vending should be taken as evidence of this.) It should be noted that La Cocina, who was also granted permits when Blue Bottle was, will be going forward with their presence in Dolores Park.
Chain stores should not be allowed in the parks.
Chicken John, one of the most vocal Blue Bottle opponents argued that no chains should be allowed in the park. Chicken (who it seems germane to mention is in a long-term relationship with Ritual Roasters owner Eileen Hassi, who has three outposts; Ritual's beans are sold all over the place) emailed me with what seems to be the prevailing sentiment: "I'm vigilant against chain stores and such like. It's pretty clear to me that BB is a chain store. And this is the point that I am trying to hammer home. It's quite easy, actually. And very confusing. Because there isn't a clear definition as to what a chain store is or isn't." [ed's note: huh?] According to this article that came to pass when American Apparel wanted in the Mission, though, it's eleven locations or more nation wide, which does not define Blue Bottle which has seven, many of them kiosks.
Only locals should be in the park.
Freeman is a longtime San Francisco resident, and while he has operations in Oakland and Brooklyn, the heart of Blue Bottle remains here. His original Linden alley location remains open. You can still find Blue Bottle at the farmer's market. The company's flagship location is in Mint Plaza. (An area, much like Hayes Valley, that the company rolled the dice on and helped to revitalize.)
If Blue Bottle isn't local, what is? Does local only mean hyper-local? Should only neighborhood vendors be allowed to apply? If that's the case, then why should all of the city's tax dollars go to support the park? If you want it to be a park that's just for you, pay for it. The further you follow this chain of logic, the more lost you become.
In summary, San Francisco is broke. Parks and Rec is particularly hard hit. Services have been cut all across the city, and this new plan was going to help put some badly needed money back into greenspaces. And it was going to do that by innovating. It was going to do that by offering space to vendors at a pricing structure that would let them sell high-quality offerings. But that won't happen now, and the opposition was conducted in such a way that it will likely make other small businesses think twice before attempting to follow suit. (Of course, companies like Peet's or Starbucks should have ample resources to weather what would be for them, a small spot of bother.)
Dolores Park should be a reflection of the city. In this Blue Bottle case, maybe it is.

anything about a great coffee company catches my eye. i'm a scanner, unless i'm stuck in the lu, so this article was a real pain in tha uknowhat to read. it was like walking up to a conversation at a party mid stream and thru the remaining part i am totally lost as to the subject matter.
Let us note, just for a moment, that the biggest pain in the petition is a person who in all seriousness calls himself Chicken John. Enough said, no? I'm a 38-year resident of the city and as liberal as they come, but this bleeding-edge nut job does not in anyway represent the diverse wishes of the citizens this otherwise delightful place to live.
As a local resident I feel that the writer doesn't have enough familiarity with the actual park situation. I live half a block above the park, which means that pretty much every time I leave the house I walk by or through the park. I also visit the park daily to give my dog some off-leash time.
We do not need any more visitors (referenced as a benefit to having vendors in the park). If the writer became more familiar with the park he would realize that it is already being overused. A few years back I started avoiding the park on weekends because it was often so full I couldn't find a place to sit. Not to mention the piles of trash that are left daily.
The overcrowding in recent years has gotten so bad that I have actually considered moving. I realize this is part of city life, however, if I had wanted to live next to a non-stop party I would have settled in a different part of town.
I am 100% against any vending in the park that would draw more visitors. There are a number of lovely coffee shops nearby that should satiate park user needs.
well ritual just lost any business id ever give them again. blue bottle is a thousand times tastier anyway.
Nice post
Hey! I represent Dolores Park Hipster Fixie Dog Owners for Stalin, and our group has not been heard! We are an organization of four people who LOVE DOLORES PARK, and because we are SO SMALL, you must give MORE WEIGHT to our voices! It is only fair!! We all agree that the BB cart must not come to the park! The park must remain a TRADE-FREE ZONE. Except for the push-carts. And the drug dealers. Oh, and those people that go to Bi-Rite and those six other coffee shops within a block and contaminate the park with their trash. BUT THAT'S DIFFERENT! Those are local people! They're special! (Nevermind that Bi-Rite expanded their operation in spite of neighborhood opposition...)
Down with the man! Down with for-profit coffee vendors! And Ritual TOTALLY doesn't count, because somehow I always manage to get their crappy coffee for free!!!
(ONOZ! I'm posting this on a for-profit magazine's website! Aiiieee! I'm spitting on myself right now in penance!!!)
Wow,
People who agree that this is a good article should take a closer look and please, try to understand what is going on here.
Don't be upset at the groups who opposed BB from coming into Dolores park. It is not about BB, it is about selling our public space for a budget crisis. The Dept of Parks &Recs MUST be held accountable for not reaching out to the community(which includes EVERYONE in the neighborhood) For not being trustworthy. (BB donates to the mayor's office, and the DPR commissioners are APPOINTED by the mayor)(Phil Ginsburg is the GM, and creator of the BB permit, and once Chief of Staff to Newsome) hmmmm something is fishy. real fishy.
I am getting frustrated with the comments about how chicken john did this, and a small group did that, PLEASE STOP!!!! We are a much larger group then you think. We are not going to allow the DPR GM sell off public space without the peoples input or approval. PERIOD. Ask yourself, what is next? Billboards, more venders, Approved permitted christian rock concert in the park? Come on people, it is not about NOT having venders, it is about doing it the right way. The way the DRPR should've done in the first place.
For those who are whining about BB, please understand the actual process. If you a concerned citizen you would take the time, look at the facts, minutes, and information available and you would see our clear message. Instead it sounds like people are emotionally bashing people for ????We are standing up for our rights, and we are not being told what to do by appointed commissioners who have been to Dolores Park only recently. We are a mix of residences, business owners, and concerned citizens who believe in a process, a fair and respectful exchange.

If you want to comment about this article, educate yourself with the facts, this article is 3% of the story.
This is Matthew (co-owner) from Fayes Video and Espresso Bar.
There has been a lot of debate over the situation in Dolores Park and The Parks and Rec dept and this vendor and that vendor.
So much has been said, article after article and I just didn't know where to begin to 'jump in' and comment. (my first 'jump in' was sept 20th: see below)
- Its absolutely true that Fayes has been involved in this process and that we were involved in the petition and have been to many City Hall/DRP meetings and community meetings, etc etc.
-Its no secret. Fayes is very visible on those fronts.
-It has been frustrating that over the last month or so that very little attempt was made to contact us or other 'loud' businesses/neighbors in the community to get their side of the story or any other side of the story.
-This has always been about the process or lack there of which was initiated by The Parks and Rec; the lack of transparency mixed with some questionable responses and statements from the Parks and Rec staff/manager.
-We, along with other members in the community have been meeting up and coming up with some ideas to help the Dolores Park with its 'problems' (monies, trash, etc)
-There are fun fund raising plans.
-Organizing with existing local community organizations.
-Creating a 'fund' for Dolores Park from sales of items from local businesses.
There is a huge list. Not all the ideas are amazing and not all of them are going to work. But the point is that there are people looking into solutions not just being cranky pants about things.
One of the ideas was organizing some volunteer trash picks up days which Chicken John seems to have nominated this coming Monday to be the 1st day.
If anyone is interested in being part of a volunteer trash pick crew this coming Monday...
Stop by Fayes around 9 or 9:30am this Monday, we'll give you a coffee and a trash bag. Then go meet up with Chicken John around 10am in the park (near the swings). Sound Good?
Also, if anyone has any questions or comments about ANYTHING, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do our best give you a straight answer.

Below is a link to some comments Michael (the other owner) made back in September.
Re-reading what I said back then, I want to be a little more 'up to date' with how I feel about vendors in the park. There are many areas to split hairs over, so I am trying be more specific:
-I am not 'okay' with DPR sanctioned vendors occupying park(green) space in Dolores Park.
-If 2 vendor/trailers seem 'fine' to some people with what I feel is an already overly taxed/cramped park area, what if that led to 2 more? Would 6 be the magic number?
-If there are other alternatives to generating monies for the DRP/Dolores Park, they should be looked at. Couldn't hurt.
-Allowing vendors/trailers into Dolores Park has always been up to the DRP; its their decision. The people who have spoken up 'against' vendors in the park are just people...right or wrong, they are just concerned. It's sometimes difficult to have a voice in our city and when you have a chance to possibly be heard, you should go for it, no matter the outcome.
I always think I am going to type like 100 words and it turns out to be 1000+.
- I am aware I am long winded.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Hopefully we'll see you on Monday.

And I have taken Chicken seriously before. I appreciated his efforts to keep live music in the Mission. But more to the point Blue Bottle took that statement quite seriously.
By Mat Honan on October 22, 2010
Oh boy... here we go. Mat, you are showing consistency in your reporting. I have nothing to do with local music. As a matter of fact, I owned a club for 5 years (the Odeon), which was the only club in SF that did not have live music. OK< some. But not rock. Or roll. I have done nothing, absolutely nothing to keep live music in the Mission. I am a variety arts guy. A circus guy. I'm an activist. I rail against the machine. I build boats out of garbage. But I have nothing to do with, nor do I appreciate, live music. I don't even drink or go to bars. Ever. Ever.
You are not supposed to take the clown seriously. But know that I do wield some small power here. And can easily rally people together. I can not, however, put an idea into people's heads that they don't agree with. I do not have this power. I can organize people who are like minded, but I can not put the idea into their minds. I control a list. Of many thousands of persons. I post things to this list. Discussions are sparked. Things that 'hit', we move towards. Things that don't, fizzle.
This hit. 300 messages in the first hour. People were up in arms about the privatizing of our parks. These are intelligent art types. Not young hipsters with tight pants and fixie bikes. These are home owners, Stanford Phd's and so on... cool people. Effective, relevant, affluent, motivated people. Remember when I ran for mayor and had to raise $5,000 in 4 days and raised $10,000? Those people. Why am I telling you this? Because you are insinuating that I was to organize people to spit on BB employees. That I could get anyone to spit on anyone else at any time is ludicrous. Your use of the word threat is such a stretch that it's actually comical.
But why? Why would you imply this? Why would James Freeman say that, if he indeed really did? Well. To flip this around. Now Mr. Freeman is the victim. And I, the aggressor. Dude, that is not going to work. You may have a couple hysterical droolers here in your comments section but BB backed out because of the letters that were written to the commissioners. BB backed out because they knew that there would be thousands who opposed them. It's bad for their brand. But you can't blame that on anyone but James Freeman. Not me, not some stupid comment I made hyperbolizing a vision of people "Spitting Mad" and certainly not on any kind of NIMBYism. The privatizing of our parks is a serious issue. The commodification of our city is a serious issue. The ever encroaching chain stores everywhere is a serious issue.
You are a coffee writer. That makes you an art writer. Last I checked, culinary arts were firmly a part of our city of art and innovation. This is an art issue. A land use policy issue. How can us little people not be afraid of Mr. Freeman and his money? Backed by a giant VC firm and the darling of SF foodies it's pretty clear that he's used to getting his way. Good for him. But he fucked up. If he truly didn't see that this was gonna ruffle a few feathers then I kinda feel bad. But only kinda. Live and learn. It's hard to fight millionaires with connections in high places. So you gotta jump up and down a lot to get people to listen. But they didn't wanna listen. There is a reason there was a charter amendment to change the way the commissioners are selected for RPD that almost made it to the ballot this year. But you can bet your sweet bippy that it's gonna get on the ballot next year. If we even need to, we got a new mayor comming to town (Everyone vote Gavin for Lt. Gov!!!!) and with the stoke of a pen we won't need to fucking freak out to stop Phil Ginsberg from selling everything that isn't nailed down. I'm not the only person railing against RPD either. I can give you a list. I think I will, actually.
RPD is not broke. It has a 12 million dollar budget shortfall. So close a few golf courses. There are many, many ways for RPD to balance their budget. I think that best way would be to get some new commissioners and get the new broom to sweep clean. But selling spots to for profit business' with no contorls and no outreach for super cheap is gonna get people mad. Spitting mad. Google it, 296,000 hits for spitting mad. It means really mad. It doesn't mean assault. If you keep quoting me out of context, I'm gonna track you down. And smother you with kisses. That my friend, is a threat of assault. You can hire a lawyer and press charges against me for it.
Your article is about one side of a story. If you can't admit that, then conversing with you is a waste of time. You are a memeber of the press. And you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Your story and a few others are claiming that one (or just a few) loud people have embraced hyperbole and puffery to sound like many. I say that if we had the hearing that we want with the correct outreach, you will see how wrong you are. My guess is that 2,000 or 3,000 people would show up. And shut this down. Then you couldn't blame it on me or anyone else. It would have only been the fault of Mr. James Freeman. Who finally, after doing so well for so long made a bad decision. And that's OK, if that's all it really was. We can forgive people who just didn't see that what they were doing was gonna step on toes. But the process was so sneaky and so.... so.... sleazy. Slimy. Corrupt. Well, it seems like it was. That it seems like there is something broken here. And we are going to discover this broken thing, and we are going to smother it in kisses until we fix it.
As I told you on the phone, Mr. Mat... this has nothing to do with coffee. This is about Phil Ginsberg selling our parks. This is about an issue that will divide SF in half, as you can plainly see. Some people are down with commercialism and some people are allergic. We should find a compromise that we all can live with that doesn't seem too slanted to one side. And to do that, we need good governance and good leadership. So basicly, we are fucked.
But you… you have a great responsibility here. Not to your advertisers, not to your magazine but to the truth. Sure, use some outrageous hyperbole to get people to come to the show… but leave it on the flyer. Once we are all here watching your stage, it’s up to you to bring it back home. You are how people are getting information. To use this power to serve any other master but truth is sinister. Especially when the issue is about the absence of facts to begin with.
I didn’t sign on to get what I wanted and then fade back into obscurity. We are organizing to address the issues. Fundraising, garbage clean up and actually helping RPD to realize a fair and reasonable outreach program. With these tools and others we can all be on the same team and not have the feel of ‘inside baseball’. This is happening right now, and it’s happening on all volunteer labor.
But since EVERY article has been about hyperbole or NIMBYism, I have to remind people that this isn’t about coffee or Blue Bottle. It’s about selling space in our parks. This would have been the same outcry if it was a donut shop or a trinket stand. Because it’s about process. The same flaws would have come out. We have made a list of the articles (there are over 40 as of today) here: http://stopthetrailer.wordpress.com/media-coverage/
And we are defiantly not leaving any out on purpose if you know of any more we will instantly put them up. We will find consensus and we will author a process that will make sense. There are avenues open to do that reasonably. But if RPD tries to shut us down and lock us out, there will be jumping up and down and yelling and saber rattling and we will look to go to the ballot to change the way the commissioners are selected and we will fight and we will win. Much of the vitriol came from the tone of Phil Ginsburgs dealings with us. Just shut down mode. That’s not going to work. We will not stand for it. And we shouldn’t. Phil Ginsburg and the commissioners work for us, not the other way around. They implement our will. I’m sure it’s a tough job, but all they had to do was suspend the program until all voices were heard. They didn’t do that, they tried to steamroll. And thus, we ALL made this mess. We didn’t win this battle when BB pulled out. We will win this battle when there is a fair and reasonable process. Which is now up to RPD.
My email address is chickenjohn@chicknejohn.com
And although there is at least one post here from someone claiming my name that is not me, this post is from me. Obviously.
I will be at Dolores Park on Monday mornings at 10:00 AM (meet at the swing set) to help pick up trash. Anyone is invited to help. We can argue the entire time and throw garbage at each other. In the next few months, I am committing to fill a garbage bag for every sentence I have written about this issue. Maybe that will save RPD a few bucks and make the park nicer. There is legislation we are looking at now that uses a membership model for getting around state laws on food push carts. There are fundraising events to organize. There is much work to do. Although I’m not a great leader or whatever my enterance into this fray was not a hit and run. I’m committed to Dolores Park, my neighborhood and to San Francisco, the city of art and innovation.
Thanks for listening
Chicken John
Thank you for posting this. Much-needed, well-written critique of a really unfortunate mess. There was also the conflict of interest by way of Faye's Video & Espresso's very vocal dissent and initial spearheading of the petition. The whole thing is fishy.
San Francisco largely deserves itself half the time.
The sad part is the other half who don't deserve it.
Why has this city's population hurt two local businesses by forcing them to move or close or pack up shop all together. First Ike's Sandwiches is forced out of their location in the Castro because tenant's did not like the noise. Now, Blue Bottle sees what can happen to small businesses that do not conform to this stupid idea that San Francisco has about itself. Which honestly to me, is being free to try new things and grow and succeed as a small business owner. I understand not having Burger King or McDonald's in the Castro and other parts of the city because you want diversity in restaurants and you do not want the large corporations to push out the small guys. What does one do when it is the people that are pushing you out? You say "forget it" and move on to another location... I frequent Dolores Park and I will say, I would rather the city be making money from revenues generated by local busiensses and not raising my taxes that is for sure. Think about that people that are so dead set against this and other great ideas when your taxes are through the roof and all of a sudden you are staring at a McDonalds across the street from your house because San Francisco is so broke they ignore you and do what makes them the most money... You are most welcome!
So James Freeman has decided to pull out of vending his product in Dolores Park. That does not prevent him from holding fund-raisers and/or making donations to the beloved, charming neighborhood asset that he has loved for years. I thought the whole venture was based on his benevolence and altruism. Right?
Mat Honan-
that's really all you are going to add?
you are going to compare a trailer with a generator to a mountain bike?
and oddly enough Rec and Park NOT ONCE mentioned the vendors as a means to raise revenue for the parks on their facebook page either...
great outreach.
Colin & Anonymous - You've got a point about the trailer. I think that's a process issue the city should have done better. No one should have been taken by surprise by that trailer, but they were. Using the term "pushcart" is bound to surprise people when a trailer shows up. I think that's a real failure of Parks & Rec.
I think there's a lot of room for debate about what we want in our parks. Everyone has different ideas about what should and shouldn't be allowed. Non-native plants? Smokers? Nudity? Alcohol? Soccer pitches? Mountain bikes? The city isn't ever going to get everyone to agree, but it should make a better effort to make sure no one is surprised.
It's immature to make this an issue about Chicken John, when there were plenty of obvious reasons why people would oppose this deal.
The fact is, the Park & Rec's "pushcart policy" changes apparently meant that they'd sell a long-term rental for not a pushcart, but a rather large trailer.
The whole "meetings were previously announced" argument rings hollow, because of just how obvious it is, in retrospect, that Parks & Rec failed to contact any of the key groups involved with the Dolores Park region / community. The whole process It reminds me of a Douglas Adamseque permitting process for demolishing the earth for a hyperspace bypass, frankly.
Lastly, there's the larger issue that people in this area are generally opposed to the commercialization of their public spaces. If it were simply a matter of licensing a few small, independent pushcarts, that would likely not aggravate anyone... but a large, branded trailer from a rapidly growing establishment is obviously more than many people would want.
I don't want a branded Blue Bottle trailer... or a branded Ritual trailer. Or a big trailer in our parks at all. And yes, I'm opposed to the idea of the other vendor having the same kind of deal, too, because this should have nothing to do with Blue Bottle, specifically.
Blue Bottle wisely backed down, because they were the most visible target for many people's frustrations over a very bad Parks & Rec process... and I think they should be commended for doing so. In truth, though, the whole idea should be reviewed, with more actual public feedback and less effort on the part of Parks & Rec to steamroll the process through.
You completed glossed over the other large issue here that a large trailer with a constantly running generator is not a park improvement.
p.s. assuming that two articles in the Chronicle is good enough public disclosure is assuming that anyone reads the Chronicle. I mean how hard would it have been for Parks & Rec to send a couple emails/phone calls to the local businesses and Dolores Park community groups?
BOYCOTT RITUAL! Say no to terrorist NIMBYs like "Chicken John." He's a liar and needs to be exposed for the fraud he is. His longwinded bs here just proves it. BOYCOTT RITUAL SPIT ON A VEGAN DONUT!
Coffee is not local no matter how you present it. Blue Bottle is a middle man for a product that is not even grown in the USA. Coffee isn't good for you or me anyway. Addiction is yucky. Acidic coffee is bad for the soil it grows in, preventing native plants/crops from growing. It's bad for your digestive tract. We even know that people that drink a lot of coffee can become schitzophrenic. So why support this industry?
So here's an ironic thing: hipster types gentrify the mission, raise rents, and bring about an influx of boutiques and pricey restaurants. Some would say that, by these actions alone, they are changing the character of the neighborhood and introducing a level of commerce that didn't previously exist. but when the next wave comes in -- be it American Apparel or (heavens!) Blue Bottle, suddenly this is pristine sanctified space that can't be corrupted. I'm not saying it'd be wonderful to have American Apparel in the Mission, but you can't get all sanctimonious just because someone else comes in one step after you got there. If you hadn't moved there, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Where's the self-awareness?
One more point: large swaths of the mission are still riddled with poverty and violence. How about focusing this kind of energy on fixing the real problems in this community?
oh and one other observance about this article- you mention that this was well publicized but the most recent article you are sighting about this was from the Chronicle (February 2010)...
thats over 7 months ago and before the RPD was supposedly doing "outreach".
I'd also say that is a pretty presumptuous statement to say that everyone who lives around Dolores Park (Noe Valley, Mission, Castro) reads the Chronicle food sections or any sort of foody blog for that matter.
And just for the record the original petition, which I understand used a straw man argument, gathered 891 signatures. I encourage you to check it out
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?dp94110&1
and I think by reading the comments people left, you can see that people knew that it wasn't McDonalds proposed for Dolores park.
It saddens my that 7x7 has allowed this form of journalism, lazy. The past few locked and loaded articles have all been about Blue Bottle, I thought "Mat Honan is a coffee-obsessive who prowls the city in search of the perfect cup. Each Wednesday, he writes about San Francisco coffee culture for 7x7." I didn't realize he was now writing about politics.
From my following of this story I was under the impression that Rec and Park failed to do the proper outreach with the community before allowing a permitted vendor into the park. I was actually at a meeting where they openly admitted that they didn't follow their RFP process or whatever you call it.
So shouldn't they be held accountable? How come Mat Honan isn't interested in that side of the story?
Even if Chicken John said crazy things, at least he owns them and isn't afraid to get a little dirty. He seems to think Dolores Park is something worth fighting for ,and as quoted in that Mission Local article obviously James Freeman did not. I respect him for bowing out but enough with the pitty party please.
More to the point, "San Francisco is broke" is simply the worst argument in favor of adding commercial vending to Dolores Park, because once the good times come rolling in, those vendors will have been established and never go away. Blue Bottle does make a very good product, as the long lines at their stores attest. I am not keen to see the eyesore of a long line to buy coffee marring the sight-lines in Dolores Park every single day.
If you are surprised at the threats of spitting, perhaps you should recall the invective hurled at Kink when they moved into the Armory. There are a lot of people who feel like they "own" the Mission, and they do not want to see change. In my opinion, Dolores Park is rather small for organized vending, as on sunny days there is barely a spot to sit. That said, I don't hate the idea, but suspect the opposition comes from local businesses who think their bottom line will be threatened by better coffee in the park.
CJ, you have been probably the worst promoter of unintelligence in this whole "debate." You've regularly taken others' genuine attempt at civil discourse and dragged it straight into petty name-calling and personal emotional insult. Sorry, you can't call people "a cunt" or "a tool," pepper your screeds with foul language, make wild and inappropriate suggestions about people's motivations, resort to extreme reactionary hyperbole (by your own admission), and then try to claim the high ground of an "intelligent" and "fair" conversation.
don't worry dude, we KNOW you love the attention.
I'm extremely liberal, somewhat socialist even, but this whole debacle makes me ashamed. I live just a couple of blocks from the park, and I'm disgusted that people like chicken[sh*t] john all the way down on army street crap on projects like this in my neighborhood. I know the locals here can go too far with their whining, but this has gotten absurd. thanks to all these NIMBY jerks - many who don't even live around here, the park has just lost out on a great opportunity for improvement, and for what?
BlueBottle. Come to Burlingame. We would love to have you. Let the neighborhood nutsos near Dolores Park continue their freedom-crushing hippie PC BS subject them to higher prices and lower quality with no apparent benefit to either. I love your coffee.
There are probably more posts on the comment field here then posters... Which means that you shouldn't beleive a post that has someones name attached to it unless verified.
I'd participate in an intelligent discussion. There isn't one happening here.
But I would like to say that if this article is the only one you have read on this subject, you might wanna read a few more. As this one is missing a good percentage of the actual story and instead focuses on some bullshit.
But yea, I'm guilty. I said that stuff. It's called hyperbole. But at no point in time did any reasonable person think that I have the abity to get 1,000 people to spit on someone or something. I said that they would be 'spitting mad'. And they would be. There are thousands of people opposed to this. If there was a hearing, you'd hear from them.
But sure, keep talking about me. I love the attention.
Actually I'm immune to all this. It will all just be gone daddy gone in a week.
However, I'm committing to fundraising and activating people in regards to Dolores Park and so are tons of other people. This is a serious issue, this selling our park space off. I have every confidence that with some sime education tools we can find some solutions that don't involve for profit stores renting our recreation spaces.
However, you would need to verify this email before you could take it seriously because I didn't write the other "chicken John" post here. My guess is that the writer will not bother to verify this. It would compliment his story in perfect calibration of hidious anti-journalism that is making him look like the tool he probably is, but maybe he's just having a bad week or I fucked his girlfriend or something.
At the end of day, we're all trying to do what we think is right. We all want a fair process.
Or do we?

just saw this on chicken john (rinaldi's) FB page. it all makes sense now.
and yes, this is really on his FB page.
Did you guys know the Webster St BB location is walking distance from Lake Merritt. Just to let ya know.
Thanks for the article. I live in the neighborhood, just a couple quick blocks from the park. First, come on folks the carts are NOT some cloaked surprise news. I heard about this ages ago, and I was super excited to be welcoming the program in to the park. I was even more happy to hear that Blue Bottle was participating. Second, it's too bad that a tiny group of the self-entitled can put up enough noisy resistance to drive the reasonable to the conclusion that it's not worth their time to pit reason in a fight against the ridiculous.
I love the previous commenter's reference to Kink.com. For thirty years, the neighborhood fought reasonable proposal after reasonable proposal, always on the grounds that the proposals were never quite utopian enough. Well, sorry folks, projects need a grounding in reality and a financial backing in order to actually happen. And when you finally get a tenant that - as hard as it is to believe - didn't need a change-of-use permit and took away your only legal/logistical means of protest, you get what you get. And in that case it was porn - which of course was protested as "not family friendly" for our neighborhood. Suddenly that internet switching center doesn't seem that evil, does it?
Also reminds me of Chris Daly's shameful behavior regarding the Hunters Point redevelopment. Mr. Daly asked for a greater portion of affordable housing. He acknowledged, and even AGREED WITH, the developer's assertion that the requested higher proportion would make the project financially unfeasible, and sink it. Mr. Daly stated that he didn't care about that, and that he just insisted that they include more affordable units. He then voted against a feasible plan, on the grounds of supporting something impossible. Classic San Francisco - we'd apparently rather have a whole lot of nothing, rather than a moderate amount of something.
I moved to SF a pretty left-wing democrat. The longer I stay here, and the more ridiculous and frustrating these "community activist" actions get, the more republican I become.
Michelle D, what law, exactly, is being broken? LOLOL
AUTHOR Mat Honan thinks its his responsibility to 'clearly disclose' the personal relationship of a private citizen (Chicken John) with that of a "Rival" businesses of Blue Bottle.
You are kidding right?
I can't wait till Chicken John hands you or your employer the law suit.
Mat Honan - You sir are one of the people who continue to fire people up with rumor, innuendo, and fear.
i happened to catch the broadcast of the rec and park commission meeting on t.v. (ch.26). it was brutal. i live 5 blocks away from dolores park, and that moment was the first i had heard of the whole idea to add venders in the park. from the public comment, it seems that many of them had only heard of it all 4 or 5 days prior to the commission meeting. many of the comments were about the already excessive use of dolores park, and that by adding a coffee and food cart program there would be even more people. i love it that there are people using the park. parks are often not used at all. but when the grass is close to dead, the trash becomes an overwhelming issue, and the city has to rent port-a-potty's and park them in rows next to the sidewalk due to so many park goers i start to see what the neighbors of the park are saying. it wasn't (from what i was seeing and hearing at the meeting) an outright attack on blue bottle. many of the comments were in favor of blue bottle, just not in favor of the proposed insertion of a mobile trailer into the park. the process failed mostly. this is also a sad case of those who scream the loudest, and post the most threats(?!?!?!) can bully a business. but please know that the bullying was probably the cherry on top, and not the sole reason for the choice blue bottle came to. i feel that blue bottle actually listened to the public comment at the commission meeting, and gave the project some serious thought. i'll just add one more thought i have....fuck chicken john. that dude is just gunning for attention. his heart may be in the right place, but he's an ass for how he handles situations. just my opinion.
Wow. One obsessive and abusive Blue bottle fan with like 30+ comments posing as 20+ aliases. I feel sorry for the Dolores Park community and the businesses that have had to put up with this kind of abuse for months now. No loyalty for the peeps that brought up Dolores Park to it's stature it holds today. Entitled San Francisco non-nimbys. Chicken J, personal derogatory comments and posing as your name on the blog. I think its time you sue the person that posed as you on this blog.
People!!! Let's get back on track! Snarkiness isn’t helpful. The first I heard of this was by word of mouth in June or July 2010. And what I heard was that Rec & Park was going to be allowing some pushcarts in the park to sell coffee and food. When I heard, I wasn’t particularly happy. I thought it was a bit unfair to the people who’d put their money and sweat into making this a great food neighborhood. But I wasn’t going to rant about it, go NIMBY. What made me totally opposed was when I found out that what Rec & Park had publicized as small, mobile pushcarts turned out to be two large vans (and they had originally wanted many more). And R&P wasn’t interested in promoting a food culture, because they were going to license just two vendors for a period of five years – effectively giving them a monopoly and cutting out every other small vendor who might want in (unless, of course, they were going to put even more vans into the park, which clearly wasn’t going to happen). This is not the cool thing a lot of you seem to think it is.
And R&P did violate the Sunshine Ordinance by not publicizing this where they should and when they should.
And think of this. You all know that every time in SF someone wants to open a new restaurant or bar, put up a new building, even remodel a flat, they put up a large white sign at the location saying exactly what is being proposed, and where and when there will be a public discussion about it. Nothing like that happened here.
I should say I don't think Ritual had anything whatsoever to do with any of this. Arguing to boycott Ritual seems counter-productive. They're another great bay area business that did nothing irresponsible, as far as I am aware. My point was that Chicken does have a connection that ought to be clearly disclosed. It doesn't mean Ritual is responsible for anything he said or did. It isn't.
And I have taken Chicken seriously before. I appreciated his efforts to keep live music in the Mission. But more to the point Blue Bottle took that statement quite seriously.
Most all of you are low life, P.C. whores that are ruining San Francisco.
also notice how Chicken John can't answer questions honestly, he just acts like a little bratty bitch? Go back to the flyover state you're from, Chicken and don't come back. And by the way, I hate Ritual Roasters now. Hope it gets shut down by NIMBYS and a big fat McDonalds opens up in its place and pumps out McRib Sandwiches to the Odeon Bar (Oh wait that went out of business because the owner cheated people, Right CHICKEN!)
It's time to boycott Ritual Roasters, since it's clear they had a hand in this for their own selfish agenda. Spit on their stupid vegan donuts. I will never buy their coffee again and if I see it for sale elsewhere in a restaurant or coffee shop I will ask them to stop buying it. Time to take the medicine, Ritual. This is on YOU!
PLUCK "chicken John" gott love the progressive hipsters ruing SF. These lame idiots don't realize it take business tax dollars
to pay for all their stupid welfare plans
I can NOT believe this article let along the comments.
First off, the defense and congratulatory sentiments about the author see suspect. There have been at least 20 articles about this issue over the last couple of weeks and now this john-come-lately writer sums up the whole issue in one article that everyone buys?
Sick.
Second, who is taking Chicken John seriously? Parks and Rec? City Hall? The Blue Bottle and La Cocina trailers were going to roll out in the park, like when this week or next then BB backs out of it because of 'threats' by Chicken John?
Many of you don't take him seriously when he makes a good argument, but then YOU DO take him seriously when he talks about spitting? Which is it then? Chicken John - its all serious or none of it?
You can't pick and choose which, well I guess you can because you have chosen to highlight what 'words' you take out of context and which ones you don't.
And so, these trailers are gonna save Dolores Park? Why does it have to be Blue Bottle that saves the park? What about another trailer or vendor or La Cocina?
As for the NIMBYs or business owners or local residents speaking up: The parks/rec more or less 'invited' people who want to say something, say something (sure, after the plans/permits were already in place) and they did. That's it. They said how they felt. Those people are just people saying how they feel, much like many of you are on this , I guess you would call it, article. But see, those people speak up and take action at community meetings and City Hall whereas you people 'taken action' via complainy comments.
Stop whining and throwing a rock at the first scary noise you hear and educate yourself on what has actually been going on.
If you were going to the Giants game and you 'heard' someone was going to spit on you, would you not go to the game? You would just give up, just like that?
I guess that is what Blue Bottle did, UNLESS there were other reasons. Which are?

Just got sick of dealing with his would-be new neighbors.
Nice.
Look at this transcript of Park and Rec Board meeting...seems like the Park and Rec staff are misbehaving...The speaker (crystal) is the go-to park community organizer--who, before this, worked hand and glove with Park and Rec. She was Park and Rec's best ally and Park and Rec staff sold her down the river...

Crystal Van Walstrem: "It wasn’t until August 25th that I was contacted about Blue Bottle’s permit. We oppose to a lack of community input. Neither Safe, Clean, Green Dolores Heights Improvement Club nor Dolores Park Dogs were every contacted regarding whether we wanted food vendors in the park or about specific permits. Along with Dolores Park Works we are all the go-to organizations for this park. One phone call to Bob Pelosio would have told you who those organizations are. The community has not had a chance to weigh-in about food vendors in the park. On Monday Nick Kensey came to our community meeting regarding the park’s renovation and heard the neighbor’s complaints about not being involved. All we heard from him was ‘I’m sorry’ and not once did he say ‘and this is what we’re going to do to rectify the situation’. Yesterday when I spoke to the partnership and resource development team I was offered, and I quote, ‘if we put a hold on the permits and we schedule a date for the community meeting right now will you not address the Commission at the meeting tomorrow?’ This is highly unethical and freedom of speech should not be a bargaining chip. We are asking the Commission to put holds on the permits until we’ve had a community meeting with Recreation and Park to discuss the issue in detail so that our concerns and questions may be addressed.
Hey wait just a MINUTE. There are 15 Chicken John locations in West Virgina ALONE. Chicken John MUST, therfore, be BANNED from San Francisco immediately.

Wow. After being forced out of SF (mission) after 30 years due to selling of my building and not being able to afford anything in the Bay Area I have been a refugee in another country. Longing for my SF. Waaah. Now I'm thinking twice about my home sweet home. Coffee, like anything, can be affordable, fair trade, and come in many, many styles. Mix it up and move it out.
anything about a great coffee company catches my eye. i'm a scanner, unless i'm stuck in the lu, so this article was a real pain in tha uknowhat to read. it was like walking up to a conversation at a party mid stream and thru the remaining part i am totally lost as to the subject matter.
this reads like something i would right in a real hurry after a night of only six hours sleep. maybe i'm just stunned that people would spit on a coffee cart person, unless u were in orange county attending a "tea party" i guess.
