Banana Republic's Jack Calhoun on Edition, SF Style, and Mission Taquerias

By

Since we're always on the hunt for great accessories that won't break the bank or won't break apart within a week of wear, we were ecstatic to hear that Banana Republic was opening a shop dedicated to their most covetable accessories. We were even more thrilled to see that the store is set up to encourage shoppers to touch and try on everything (no more locked glass cases!), which makes it feel like a candy store for fashionable ladies of all wallet sizes. We went to scope out the space on Thursday, and were lucky enough to catch up with Banana Republic's President (and Pac Heights resident) Jack Calhoun to inquire about why they decided to open Edition, as well as a few of his favorite things:

Why did you decide to create this seperate outlet, and what differentiates Edition's accessories from those you'd find in other Banana Republic stores? We've had great accessories at Banana Republic for a long time and wanted to create an environment to showcase our collection while offering a higher level of customer service. You'll find a mixture of pieces that are limited edition (30-40 percent are exclusive to the store) and hand-selected pieces from our other Banana Republic stores.

What's it like to be in the fashion industry in a city not particularly known for its fashion? You feel really special about it. San Francisco is a perfect fit for Banana Republic because it's our version of fashion. It's a city full of stylish people who value great quality and deals equally, and aren't afraid to make a statement.

So how would you describe San Francisco style? Effortless style. San Franciscans manage to always look great without taking themselves too seriously.

What are your favorite restaurants in SF? It's impossible for me to choose favorites. We have a phenomenal mix of restaurants and I love going to a taqueria in the Mission just as much Gary Danko, depending on my mood. For me, it's about trying out different places instead of going to the same spot every week.

Where would we find you on the weekends? Either running in Crissy Field or shopping for home decor in Hayes Valley. Those are my two outdoor activities.

What do you think will be the top accessories of the season? I think our cocktail rings will go like candy because of the high style and low price point. Also, the statement necklaces because it's an easy way to revamp an outfit you already have in your closet. You can toss one on as you're leaving work and instantly be ready to hit the town.
