5 Mocktails Getting Us Through Dry January


Let us help you get through what feels like the 13th month of the year with a batch of refreshing mocktails by Bay Area mixmasters.

Dry January Mocktail #1: Fresh Victor's Rad Red Refresher

If you need an antioxidant-packed antidote to the toxic effects of doomscrolling, mix up a batch of this crisp mocktail, adapted from a recipe by Reza Esmaili for Rise Woodfire in San Mateo, and made with Fresh Victor's local cold-pressed juices.


In a 16-ounce glass of ice, add:

  • 3 ounces Fresh Victor Cactus Pear & Pomegranate
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • sparkling water to fill
  • 3-5 mint leaves (garnish)
Stir gently, garnish, and serve!

Dry January Mocktail #2: The Dorian's Refresh

Since we can't currently grab drinks with friends at The Dorian, their mocktails at home feel like the next best thing. When you order food from the Chestnut Street restaurant, you can pair it with a Refresh, their splashy take on a classic mint lemonade. Or, DIY it at home.


  • 1 1/2 ounces watermelon juice
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 3/4 ounce turbinado syrup
  • 1/2 ounce cucumber juice
  • 6-8 mint leaves (muddle and garnish)
In a 12-ounce glass, gently bruise three to four mint leaves in the turbinado syrup. Add the watermelon and lemon juices. Add ice, then the cucumber juice as a float. Garnish with the remaining mint, and serve.

Dry January Mocktail #3: Wunder's ​High January

You can give your liver a rest this month but still answer the 911 call for cranial care. Wunder canned beverages feature Delta-8 THC, a cannabinoid designed for a clear-headed, relaxing body high. Cans are available at The Apothecarium and for local delivery via Sava.


In a 16-ounce glass of ice, add:

  • 1 can Wunder Grapefruit Hibiscus
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • Soda water to fill
  • 1 grapefruit wedge or lime (garnish)
Stir gently, garnish, and serve.

Dry January Mocktail #4: Kamardine Toddy

Muslim cultures have celebrated Dry January--and a dry every other month--for centuries. Kamardine syrup is an apricot-based concentrate used to make a cold drink that's typically consumed during the holy month of Ramadan. When added to hot water, it makes a soothing winter warmer perfect for evening sipping. In San Francisco, you can buy kamardine syrup at Samirami's Imports(2990 Mission St.).


In an eight ounce cup, add:

  • 1 ounce kamardine syrup
  • 6 ounces hot water
  • 1 lemon round
  • 1 cinnamon stick (garnish)
Stir until the syrup dissolves, then garnish with the cinnamon stick and serve.

Dry January Mocktail #5: The Perfect Purée's Buddha's Hand

Napa Valley's The Perfect Purée sells a full line of fruit purées and concentrates sourced from sustainable farms. This bright and colorful yuzu spritzer is a refreshing yin-yang of tangy and sweet. Since we're currently enjoying citrus season, fresh Buddha's hand is available at local farmers markets and the produce sections of many chain grocery stores.


In a eight-ounce glass of ice, add:

  • 3 ounces Yuzu Luxe Sour from The Perfect Purée of Napa Valley
  • Perrier to fill
  • Zest from Buddha's hand or lemon
  • A shaped piece of rosemary (garnish)
Stir gently, garnish with the rosemary sprig, and serve.
